Season 34 of The Simpsons features a wide variety of episodes, proving the creators are making a strong effort to revitalize the beloved series. Have they been successful? To some extent, yes. Though a majority of episodes have been bland, deprived of the original fun formula. Having said that, several episodes manage to surpass expectations thanks to the freshness of their plots.

The season saw lots of ups and downs. A few episodes were hard to sit through, in all honesty, with one such episode coming in the form of “Hostile Kirk Place” (episode 16) which lacked in terms of plot strength and imagination.

However, The Simpsons balanced this out with episodes towards the middle and end of the season which got considerably better. In fact, the last episode takes the prize for being one of the best. Many of these stories have an important moral message as the baseline too, with episode 19 “Write Off This Episode” the perfect example of that.

While the majority of episodes this season revolve around the main characters, many side characters saw their own dedicated episodes, including Grandpa, Moe, Carl and Miles. In addition, several new characters appeared as villains, friends, and saviours. The best one has to be Goobie-Woo, voiced by Lizzo, in the season finale. Overall, the season offers good variety in terms of characters and stories.

Animation-wise, the Simpson continues to impress. Whether it’s set in a fantastical world or a crowded marketplace, the sketches have been incredibly detailed and attractive. Feelings and expressions from Lisa’s angry face to Bart’s mischievous smirk easily explain the intentions without words. And similarly, iconic Simpsons voice actors repeat the magic we fell in love with decades back.

All things considered, season 34 of The Simpsons has been above average, but what stands out is the dedicated approach. Despite plunging viewership, The Simpsons doesn’t shy away from boldly executing innovative plot ideas. And that’s what’s really paid off – many of us feel the sitcom is now back in order. Besides fresh ideas, the effort to find itself again is clearly evident in the final episodes of this season which point toward the signature Simpson feel. As a result, we have nothing but bright hopes for the upcoming season.
