Spy X Family was a major hit with audiences when its first season was released in 2022. Many fans adored it for its wholesome family shenanigans while others praised it for its action-packed sequences. While the first season has its fans, it has its critics too. Spy X Family, while a bundle of charm, failed to explore certain characters further, had too many meaningful slice-of-life scenarios, and an insufficient amount of drama and depth. With that said, does season two fix these issues or are they still prominent?

Spy X Family Season 2 continues following the Forger Family, consisting of Loid, Yor, Anya, and Bond. However, this season focuses on the manga story arc titled “The Cruise Adventure” arc. In it, Anya and her family embarked on a luxurious cruise vacation. During this event, Yor must protect a woman and her child from several menacing assassins. While Spy X Family Season 2 addresses some issues fans had with the first, some similar issues rear their head here. However, fans will cheer knowing season 2 is a step up from the first.

Spy X Family Season 2’s Cruise Adventure Arc is what the series needed to keep all viewers invested. This arc provides viewers with a great deep dive into Yor’s assassin career. From Yor’s multiple fights with the Cruise assassins to her exceptional partnership with Matthew, this is exactly what we needed to see from her character. Although Yor’s motherly persona and antics were charming in season one, having her stuck in those situations was a poor decision as she felt sidelined in comparison to Anya and Loid.

Additionally, this story arc is well-crafted and offers some twists some fans may not have anticipated. From unexpectedly powerful foes to the surprising tension between the informant and the evil assassins, fans will appreciate series creator, Tatsuya Endo’s writing here. On top of a few compelling slice-of-life scenarios and stellar moments of introspection, foreshadowing, and world-building, Spy X Family Season 2’s Cruise Adventure arc gives the audience an action-packed and emotional excursion to sit through.

Unfortunately, the entire season’s storyline isn’t as grandiose. This season contains the same unnecessary scenarios fans may not find appealing. Scenarios like Franky’s second quest for love and the kids’ lust for an absurd pastry, while comical, don’t add much value to the over-arching tale, and feel like a chore to sit through. Essentially, they should’ve been cut and replaced with more significant scenarios that give development to our pre-established cast.

The slice-of-life scenarios following the Cruise Adventure arc’s finale are great examples of this, as Becky and Bond receive great development in them. Despite its slow but acceptable start, Season 2’s storyline was a blast to observe every week. Therefore, fans who dropped Spy X Family during the first season’s second cour may adore and rewatch the drama, action, comedy, and turns the second season has.

The Forger Family remains the most defined and developed of the series’s cast. However, Yor receives special attention this time around considering she’s at the forefront of this cruise’s operation alongside Matthew. As alluded to earlier, her chemistry with Matthew is fascinating as they have this student/master dynamic going on. Unfortunately, Matthew’s character doesn’t get explored as much as fans would hope, but his scenes with Yor are compelling to observe.

Loid and Anya receive a nice amount of screen time throughout Season 2. Like Yor, they’ll have moments where they reflect upon their family roles and question the strange occurrences happening around them. While Yor is this season’s head honcho, viewers will find Loid and Anya’s moments in season two entertaining and intriguing. As for the re-occurring side cast and new evildoers presented this season, they are all treated decently. Yet, many will find the villains’ characterization lackluster as they lack depth and uniqueness.

Wit Studio and Cloverworks Studios returned to animate Spy X Family Season 2, and it’s safe to say, they did an exceptional job. These studios put in an incredible effort to ensure visually appealing episodes to watch. From its captivating fights to its beautiful locations,  you’ll find it challenging not to be immersed in it all. This season’s OST provides audiences with a satisfying listening experience as the previous one. The sound team exceptionally captured each sequence’s mood and the voice actors pulled off pleasing performances.

Regarding direct continuations, it can be challenging for studios to deliver successful follow-ups to their respective franchises. Cloverworks Studios, Wit Studio, and Tatsuya Endo offer fans more of the same with Spy X Family Season 2. Nonetheless, they improved upon several issues season one had, resulting in a delightful spy and assassin-themed continuation fans shouldn’t miss.
