Spy X Family – Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Review

Follow Mama and Papa

Episode 1 of Spy X Family Season 2 begins with Yor completing a task for a client and informing them on the phone that she plans to return home. Meanwhile, Loid and Anya watch news stories but are unaware that they involve Yor’s recent assassin mission. Yor returns home and Loid questions if she’s feeling okay. Yor tells Loid she’s fine, but realistically she’s not well because one of the armed men she was assigned to kill shot her in the butt.

Yor heads to bed while Anya and Loid show concern for different reasons. While Anya’s worried about Yor’s injury, Loid feels terrible for sending Yor on a grocery shopping spree. Loid greets Yor in the morning and realizes she’s still in a sour mood. He asks her if she’d like to go on a date with him, causing her to panic. Yor accepts Loid’s offer to avoid people thinking they’re a pretend family. Furthermore, she wants to experience what her colleagues went through with their dates.

Loid and Yor leave Bond and Anya in Franky’s care. Franky complains to Loid in private because he doesn’t want to be treated as an errand boy. Loid hands Franky a check as payment. Loid calls for a limo, but Yor denies a ride anywhere. She doesn’t want to reveal that her butt’s in pain. This ruins 794  of Loid’s 862 date plans he scheduled with Yor today. Anya asks Franky if they can tail Yor and Loid in private, and Franky accepts her but says they’ll need disguises.

Loid notices Franky and Anya spying on him and Yor. He decides to pay it no mind because he thinks Anya’s playing spy again. Plus, he wants to focus on brightening Yor’s mood. We receive a montage of Yor avoiding as many sitting situations as possible. At the same time, Loid wonders what he’s doing wrong.

Loid and Yor visit a fancy adult restaurant. One of the workers informs Franky and Anya they can’t enter the building due to specific rules in place. As the two head home, Anya picks up on someone’s conversation via her telepathic abilities. These individuals know Yor’s true identity, signaling to Anya that she’s in danger. It turns out their waiter happens to be a survivor from Yor’s Red Circus assassination mission. He plans to kill Yor to avenge her fallen comrades. Anya’s concerned because if Yor showcases her assassin feats in front of Loid, this could result in Loid dumping Yor and taking Anya back to the orphanage he adopted her from.

The waiter squeezes blowfish poison into Yor’s drink in the kitchen. He hands it to his colleague, who proceeds to deliver it to Yor and Loid’s table. Yor drinks the concoction but it doesn’t hurt her. Rather, it heals her butt wound as the narrator explains Yor developed an immunity to poison. The waiter plans to make a bomb with things in the storage room. He’s willing to blow himself up near Yor to avenge his comrades. However, Anya beats him to it and instills fear in the waiter’s eyes.

She warns him not to mess with the Thorn Princess. The waiter accepts defeat and plans to return to his casual life. Meanwhile, Yor and Loid leave the restaurant and visit a rooftop to take in the town’s scenery. Yor thanks Loid for taking her on a date and says they should do it again sometime.

The episode closes with Yor waking up with butt problems again.

The Episode Review

After season one ended with a direct confrontation between Loid and Donavan, Spy X Family season 2 gives viewers a silly and fun chapter to sit through. From Yor’s butt problems to Franky accompanying Anya on her trail mission to pick up dating tips, this chapter had enough wacky slice-of-life themes to appease general audiences.

At the same time, it’s reassuring seeing Yor take part in an assassin-related mission from the get-go. This was one of the first season’s biggest missed opportunities. Considering this season will have an arc dedicated to Yor and her assassin prowess, this first episode gives fans a great appetizer for what’s to come down the line. Hopefully, that story arc will fulfill fans’ expectations for her.

Meanwhile, it was great seeing Anya take charge of protecting her family again. It’ll remind folks of the first time she teamed up with Bond to secretly assist Loid with the rogue college student dilemma in the first season. However, this time, it felt like Anya was on her own. The fact she successfully crafted a bomb and spooked a known Red Circus member is impressive, wholesome, and hilarious.

Overall, this was a nice way to get folks back into the Spy x Family world.
