My Man Is Cupid is a South Korean romantic comedy-drama that follows the fantastic love between a fairy and a human for over 500 years. The premise starts 500 years ago when a fairy of love, Cupid, falls in love with a human after some supernatural developments led to him being hit by his own Cupid’s arrow.

The Fairy (Cheon Sang-hyuk) and the human girl (Oh Baek-ryeon) become like lab rats in a feud between two extraterrestrials, the God of Fate and Courage. Fate tries to fix the girl up with the man she is fated to be with through the threads of fate, while Courage wants her to be brave enough to defy fate and fight to love the fairy.

While Courage wants their love to blossom, the God of Fate tries to get in between Sang-hyuk and Baek-ryeon to prove that she belongs to her fated lover, Seo Jae-hee.

The two meet 500 years later with Sang-hyuk as the owner of a love hotel and Baek-ryeon as a veterinarian, and they have one last chance to fight against fate and get their happily ever after. Amid the romance, the mystery and suspense of a serial killer lurking in the shadows and threatening Baek-ryeon’s life.

The script of My Man is Cupid has an exciting premise with past lives, reincarnations, and mystery regarding a psychopathic killer. The progress of the romance and the mystery premise is slow, dragging the story’s plot and making it difficult to follow. The numerous plot holes in the narrative, especially the connection between the past, the present, and the role of the deities, make the show an agonising watch.

Each episode leads to more frustrating questions, which the writers do not seem to answer in the next episodes. Thus, these feel unnecessarily overstretched, and the writers could have done a better job with fewer episodes since most of them feel like empty fillers. The script starts strongly with an exciting storyline but soon loses its thrill and only recovers in the last episode.

While most of the episodes are frustratingly sluggish, the finale episode is rushed and does not give a proper conclusion to the subplots other than a happy ending for the main leads.

The supporting characters with no apparent purpose in the narrative are even more frustrating than the weak writing. The main characters’ chemistry feels off, but they deliver superb acting individually. Sang-hyuk is as charming as his nature suggests since he is a fairy. He is cautious as he handles the affairs of the heart logically since the Deity tells him he is not meant to fall in love.

Regardless, once he finds the love of his life, he is protective, loving, and caring of her. His couple, Baek-ryeon, is the complete opposite of his conserved nature. She is bubbly, optimistic, humorous, determined to make him fall in love despite his caution, and a skilled veterinarian.

Although the supporting characters seem to play a non-significant role in the narrative’s development, they have a mesmerising screen presence, drawing viewers in. Jae-hee is an enigma to the viewers and himself since he seems not to understand his feelings or the reasons behind them. The cupids have fantastic chemistry, and their humorous banters are engaging.

Overall, My Man is Cupid is a story with an exciting premise ruined by weak writing. However, the talented actors deliver a flawless performance working with the highly flawed script, making this good enough for an easy watch without expecting much.
