One of the best things about Korean Dramas is how well they’re able to tell a story and how they manage to do so without too much sex, violence or swearing. After watching Hotel Del Luna and When the Camellia Blooms, I thought it would be difficult to top these two series… until I started watching Crash Landing on You (or CLOY as it has been called by its numerous fans.)

The series has managed to nail its story, character development and soundtrack while offering up some stunning imagery throughout. With plenty of heart-wrenching and powerful scenes, along with hilarious and romantic moments, CLOY has been quite the emotional roller coaster, one that I dare anyone to watch without shedding a tear or two.

The story revolves around heiress and successful CEO Yoon Se-Ri who one day ends up landing in North Korea after a storm blew her to the country while paragliding. There, she meets and falls in love with Captain Ri Jeong-Hyeok while hiding and getting used to their customs. What follows is a race against time as she tries to escape back to her country with the help of her new friends as she faces multiple obstacles and challenges. Along the way, she makes some unforgettable friendships which will change her life in ways she never thought possible.

Upon hearing the premise behind this drama you’ll be forgiven for thinking it sounds a little crazy and I wondered how it would turn out. However, from its first episode through to the emotional climax, CLOY manages to deliver its story in a clever and believable manner while staying respectful to both countries’ customs. It has the perfect blend of drama, romance, suspense and humour throughout its 16 episodes. Each chapter clocks in at 90 minutes but that shouldn’t deter anyone from watching it, as the show never feels too long or occupies its run-time with filler during the season.

Seeing Se-Ri experiencing the harsh life in North Korea was quite the eye-opener too, offering up some powerful and tense scenes while she tries hiding and returning to her home country. By contrast, during the second half of the season we see the difference between the two countries as the drama concentrates on the South. Without spoiling too much, there are some pretty funny but also touching moments involving our favourite four soldiers (the ducklings). It has been really interesting to see the polarity between the North and South but also sad to witness how some people wish both countries could be reunited.

The four soldiers have certainly charmed the audience with their innocence, fun mannerisms and friendships with each other but also with Se-Ri. Each has a distinctive personality trait, from Ju-Meok loving South Korean dramas to sweet and caring Eun-Dong, right the way through to Chi-Su who tries his best to be indifferent to Se-Ri (but fails); they are a vital part of the show and add some much needed depth to it. Some of their scenes had me laughing out loud while others had me shedding quite a lot of tears – this is likely to be true for a lot of other viewers as well.

Se-Ri and Jeong-Hyeok have become the couple everyone rooted for during the whole season and their chemistry was excellent throughout, with many taking to social media to wish that both actors get together off-screen. Both Hyun-Bin and Son Ye-Jin gave some brilliant performances and I’m looking forward to see what projects they do next. The whole cast really deserve praise though, really growing into their roles as the drama progressed, with some strong character arcs that compliment the show’s stylings nicely.

Crash Landing’s soundtrack is also excellent, with touching numbers like ” Flower” by Yoon Mi-Rae, “Sunset” by Davichi or “Here I Am Again” by Yerin Baek fitting perfectly with the moods of the episodes and helps make the show even more engaging and touching. Ironically, while writing this review I couldn’t help but listen to the soundtrack again! The cinematography boasts some stunning imagery of North and South Korea, but the real winner is Switzerland. The gorgeous scenery had made me wanting to visit the country, perhaps also as a way to fill the void the series has left after ending.

Crash Landing On You is one of the best Korean dramas on Netflix but also one of the best shows of 2020. Delivering a simple and touching story of love and friendship, the drama hits all the right notes when it comes to balancing that with suspense and romance. All the characters, which the cast manage to portray beautifully, are likable and will certainly be missed by anyone who has watched this wonderful drama. Crash Landing will certainly leave a void in my heart and I, like many others, will feel a little lost on Saturday and Sundays now. For any fans of the genre, or even those new to this style of drama, Crash Landing On You will almost certainly crash land its way into your heart.

Crash Landing On You is available to watch on Netflix. Feel free to click here and sign up now to check this show out!

  1. I just finished my tenth time watching this outstanding show. So funny, so sad and best of all the romance. All the actors help make this show outstanding no matter how how big or small the roll.

  2. The chemistry of the characters is fabulous. How in one show can you laugh, cry and swoon. I am finishing my tenth time. Best thing I have ever seen.

  3. We are married 60 years and fate also brought us together. This show reminds me of our romance. I feel like I’m watching my husband.

  4. Cloy is one of those experiences that will remain as a life highlight for me- i mustve rewatched it atleast 8-9 times and it opened up a whole new world of kdrama, Korean culture and learning korean language for me. I binge watched it in December 2020, and it is only now, end of Feb 2021, that the hangover is subsiding. Such was the emotional grip it had on me. After so many rewatches, one finds many inconsistencies as well as far fetched scenarios but the sheer perfection with which this flawed story is executed is a treat to experience. And now with the announcement of Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin dating, it lends a whole new dimension to the drama! The acting of all the cast was par excellence but I was downright shocked to the see behind the scenes footage and find how light hearted the shooting environment was for such an emotional roller coaster of a drama! Especially Hyun Bin- it was a wonderful contrast to see him bantering with son ye Jin and others on set compared to his stiff and aloof characterization as Ri jeong Hyeok .

All in all a must watch for anyone who enjoys watching a good story on love and friendship!

  5. What a show! I have laughed and cried my way through this entire series, made believable by the phenomenal acting of all characters in the show. An excellent storyline full of twists and turns, drama and emotion. The chemistry between Hyun Bin (Captain Ri) and Son Ye Jin (Se-ri) was amazing and I have to commend the acting of Yoon Ji-Min – don’t think I have ever hated a character so much! Have just read through your recaps and reviews to relive the story again.

  6. I second the motion of Mr. NGOC HOANG. This drama is truly intense and will give you a roller coaster of emotions and many fans undeniably voted sacredly for this two to win in the Baeksang and I believed they deserved the award. However, the committee decided not to make this two win as well as CLOY due to political reasons. I believed even SK didn’t like the fact that this series showed the good side of some people of NK for they loathe the latter too much. They felt they are glorifying NK with this series so I think that is the biggest issue why it did not won the Baeksang Awards. Though worldwide it is very popular, that also goes to show that political issues is a big factor.

  7. After watching the Beaksang 56th Art Awards 2020 program we were disappointed. I am Vietnamese living in the United States. I have never seen American fans or media discuss and love Korean dramas like “Crash Landing On You”. In fact, this is a perfect movie, unique content, subtle details, .. always attract viewers, even some viewers repeatedly watch the movie many times and still find it attractive. I first got to know the Beaksang 56th art awards show by many fans of the movie “Crash Landing On You” and the cast of the movie “Crash Landing On You” in the United States. When we were looking for information and how to vote for the movie “Crash Landing On You”, the supporting cast and lead actors Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin. Although we are very busy, we are always interested and endeavor to vote. The results when the votes for actors Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin nearly reached the milestone of two million votes proved that the effect of the movie “Crash Landing On You” spread not only in Korea, Asian countries. Which has come to the United States and some European countries, etc? Because we think the movie “Crash Landing On You” deserves the top prizes of the 56th Beaksang Arts Awards. We think that whether a movie is successful or not, apart from making a profit, it is impossible to ignore the love of the audience for the film, and the effect and spread of the film to the audience. But it is a pity that the Organizing Committee and the judges when reviewing and recognizing the awards are too deficient in ignoring or lacking information about the spread and success of the movie “Crash Landing On You” to spectators everywhere. For us viewers in the United States, the movie “Cash landing on you” deserved the best TV series award; the best film director; Actor Hyun Bin was the best and actress Son Ye Jin was best (you two were amazing). We thank the film as a godsend gift to audiences in the United States during the social isolation period of the COVID 19 season.

  8. Initially i couldnt get into this drama as i thougt it was a little slow for me. However, as i started the 2nd half of the drama, i couldnt stop watching even if i wanted. Then after finishing the drama, i was hit with this hollow feeling of emptiness, which came as a shock to me. I myself didnt know that i could feel such emotions from finishing a kdrama. Had to control my self to not rewatch the drama immediately after finishing. Managed for a month or so then went and rewatch it all over again. Even after finishing it for the 2nd time, i still couldnt move on and had to resort to looking at short clips on Youtube. From behind-the-scenes to short clips of the drama to clips of their wrap up party to the OST(s) even.
Heck, I’m even planning(not considering)yes, planning a trip to Switzerland to visit the locations that they visited and filmed in CLOY. That’s how much i’m into this drama and how good it was. I’m a little angry at myself for not watching the drama when it was releasing on Netflix weekly from Dec’19 – Feb’20 and waited nearly a month after it ended to start watching it. As such, I’m a little late to the party..

  9. Totally agree. CLoY made my heart felt like exploding! The story is beautifully told, and the characters developed well. The chemistry between Hyun Bin and SJY is fireworks! Loved everything about the drama. I still can’t move on, and I suppose Hyun Bin and SJY have made their best performance since I last saw them together in the movie “the negotiation”. Thanks for this beautiful review about CLoY 💕

  10. Beat K-Drama ever! After watching the first time, I can’t get over it yet and so I watched the 2nd time but still to no luck of moving on! Hi can’t believe I ended up watching again for the 3rd time! How can I move on?? This is such an amazing drama-comedy-action-love story… name it all! You will end up longing for more! Season 2 please…. I just wanna move on! But how??? Awesome ever!👌😍
