Korean Dramas often focus on interesting topics and one that has been explored by the genre is school bullying. The topic interests viewers as it is one of global importance but fans of K-drama are aware that the school bullying culture is much worse in South Korea.

The Glory, Weak Hero Class 1, Itaewon Class, and True Beauty among many others, have talked about the sensitive issue of school bullying and the adverse effects it leaves on the victims. Bitch X Rich (Bitch and Rich) is another addition to the list which discusses the issue of school bullying but explores a different angle with their mini-series.

Throughout its 10 episodes, Bitch X Rich follows the story of a poor girl named Kim Hye-in who finds herself at the elite school – Cheongdam International High School. After witnessing an accident, Hye-in gets a full-ride scholarship to the school where she becomes the prime target of the meanest girl there – Baek Je-na.

With all odds against her, Hye-in takes the challenge head-on and does everything in her power to retain her scholarship to keep studying in the school. However, since she is the only witness to the accident of a young student being pushed off the school rooftop.

Hye-in finds herself in the middle of a huge drama involving the rich spoiled brats. Hye-in makes it her life’s mission to figure out who pushed the victim off the rooftop throughout the episodes of the show.

From the get-go, Bitch X Rich is not your typical crime thriller but a rather teenager-friendly web drama that looks at the issue of bullying and shows the main lead who fights against her bully. The show starts with Hye-in wondering what it would like to be a student at the elite school and end with her hating the idea of ever joining the school.

There is so much unresolved drama on the show that the ending leaves one wanting more. With its 10, rather short episodes, the show is a mini-series at its best.

Bitch X Rich does a really good job at showing that victims need not be afraid of the perpetrators of bullying and fight back but the reality of school bullying victims is much different from what we see in this drama.

The characters all have their own personal struggles and we really see how Je-na is made to seem like an evil person but she too is dealing with her set of struggles at home. While I wish Hye-in had done things differently from the very start, she ends up in a pretty chaotic place after transferring to Cheongdam International School.

Bitch X Rich is an interesting K-drama that tackles the sensitive issue of school bullying with some light-hearted comedy. However, with the way things ended in a cliffhanger, one can only hope to be renewed for a second season. Still, it’s a great watch and definitely worth your time.
