Overtake! isn’t just another sports anime solely fixated on the racetrack. Despite the trailer’s focus on the thrill of racing, the anime delves deeper, presenting viewers with a captivating narrative. It masterfully develops intricate human connections, explores the essence of loyalty and showcases the sheer power of passion among other pivotal themes.

Season 1 of the anime centres around Kouya Madoka, a freelance photographer navigating a rough patch in life following certain incidents. Assigned to photograph racing car companies, Kouya crosses paths with Komaki Motors. Enter Haruka Asahina, another central character, an ambitious 17-year-old aspiring to claim the top spot on the winner’s podium, following in the footsteps of his late relative.

However, the path to success is strewn with setbacks. Haruka resides with his father’s friend, the owner of Komaki Motors, and while receiving tremendous familial support, they grapple with limited resources due to the exorbitant costs of Formula Racing.

Inspired by Haruka, Kouya steps in to assist, kickstarting a beautiful friendship. Despite Formula Racing’s high costs, Kouya aids them in securing sponsors by approaching local businesses, propelling Haruka into the top three ranks.

However, Kouya encounters his own challenges when his past resurfaces. A previous controversial photograph he posted, depicting a girl on the brink of a tsunami, led to severe media backlash, shattering his career and impacting Haruka’s sponsorship, leaving him struggling once more. This adversity cements their friendship as Haruka, initially perceived as self-centred, steps up to support Kouya through his troubles.

While Kouya may be seen as a supporting character, the anime predominantly unfolds from his perspective. His photography skills play a significant role in Overtake! Season 1, from capturing Haruka’s emotional moments to landing him in trouble with the media, ultimately guiding the protagonists’ main objective: capturing Haruka on the podium.

Beyond its engaging storyline, the anime showcases technical expertise in Formula motorsports. The Season 1 episodes blend technicalities with concise explanations of crucial fundamentals, making it both informative and compelling for newcomers to the sport.

Overall, Overtake! masterfully intertwines Formula Racing with a tale of burgeoning friendship. It’s a must-watch for racing enthusiasts seeking a story with emotional depth.
