That ‘70s Show became a really popular sitcom from the early 2000s and is one of the few older comedy shows that is still loved by fans. Based on the 1970’s and the 1980’s, the show told the story of teenagers from a few decades ago. The show brought in good old nostalgia and served it well in the form of a long-running sitcom.

Just like the original show, it’s 2023 spin-off That ’90 Show tries to tap into the same emotions as the original show did, in an attempt to make young viewers feel nostalgic about the 90’s.

The 10-episode Netflix Original was released earlier this year and gave fans a taste of what it was like to be a teenager in the ‘90s. However, the first few episodes are a bit hit and miss before the comedy finally starts growing on you.

The show follows the story of the new Forman teenager – Leia Forman – who’s back in Point Place at her grandparents – Kitty and Red Forman’s house.

Leia is going to be spending the summer with her grandparents and at the age of 15, tries to make lifelong friends in the three months of her visit. There, she meets Gwen, her soon-to-be best friend who is living in her mother’s old house. Gwen introduces Leia to her stepbrother – Nate and her gay friend – Ozzie.

Nate also introduces the group to his girlfriend – Nikki and his best friend – Jay who is none other than Jackie and Michael Kelso’s son. Together, the six friends take over their parents’ hangout spot, The Forman Basement, and try to live out their teenage years making fun memories as they grow older and wiser.

The show does an amazing job introducing and linking the characters from the original sitcom to the new spin-off. The moment the main cast from That ‘70s Show make an appearance on screen, viewers are hit with nostalgia. The placement of Fez in the new spin-off demands for the actor to come back to the show as a recurring cast member and I hope the makers make this happen.

When it comes to the main cast on this show, Leia is fun to watch but Jay is a character that steals the show with his Kelso genes. His character is so similar to Kelso (Michael) which makes him a treat to watch on screen. Ozzie is the life of the friend group and he is the one character from the new teenager’s group that you’ll love from the get-go.

The show starts off slow with basic jokes and what seems like a mundane plot only to gain momentum towards the end. The most emotional part of the show is Ozzie coming out to Kitty and the old woman accepting him for who he was. Some parts of the show feel forced, like that of Leo, the older kids’ much older friend.

Unlike her parents and their friends, I wish for Leia to make wiser decisions and settle down with people who are not her childhood friends when she is growing older. With Leia’s almost kiss with Nate, there is a possibility of things getting messy between her and Nikki as well as Nate and Jay in the next season.

I am also looking forward to the introduction of a love interest for Ozzie. While Gwen’s sexuality is still left open for more exploration, I would love to see her with a love interest in the upcoming season. That ‘90s Show is a fun watch and with the way things were left off in the end, we can expect more chaos in the next season now that Netflix themselves have announced its renewal.
