Final Fantasy XVI Guide: “A Chance Encounter” Walkthrough

Final Fantasy 16 Guide – Main Story Quest #7

A Chance Encounter whisks us back to the Year 873. Last we saw Clive, Cid and the group, they were frantically trying in vain to escape Titan and Shiva’s wrath. When Clive wakes up, the two Eikons have completely transformed the landscape.

Icicles protrude up from the ground, while there’s a good deal of jumping involved to navigate through the linear path here. After watching the cutscene, proceed forward along the rocky path. You really can’t miss anything here, and you’ll be graced with two Stoneskin Tonics and two Strength Tonics too. The latter is definitely worth assigning to your item shortcut along with your potions, as the next fight is going to be a bit of a test.

It’s a good idea at this point to open up your menu and check out the skill tree, which has now opened up and you can assign that previously earned AP. We’ve got a separate guide specifically for the best abilities to unlock first, so be sure to check that out too.

Shiva’s Dominant

After watching the lengthy cutscene, you’ll be fighting against Shiva’s Dominant, who’s joined by a rabble of soldiers.

Boss Fight – Shiva’s Dominant

Tips for beating: This fight starts off with Shiva’s Dominant surrounded by a number of Ironblood Soldiers. Ignore the soldiers completely and use your lock-on to focus on Shiva’s Dominant instead. Your AI companions will make swift work of the soldiers.

The dominant has very similar abilities to the Knight we detailed in the previous story quest walkthrough, but she also has ranged icicle projectiles, so be sure to dodge those when she winds up for the attack.

After the first stagger, Shiva’s Dominant will also start to use Blizzaga, which are a series of icicles that drop down from the sky to do big splash damage. Make sure to stay out of the highlighted areas, and keep spamming the Dominant with projectiles during this move.

There’s also a slight variation here too, with the Dominant hitting a vertical line of icicles, but again you’ll see this by the line on the ground, so be sure to dodge it.

Remember you’ve also got your potions here too, so make good use of those and drink a Strength Tonic when Shiva’s Dominant is Staggered too, to do a bit of extra damage until she’s defeated.

  Rewards:
2 Frozen Tears 4 Potions 3 High Potions
10 Steelsilk 48 EXP 200 Gil

After defeating Shiva’s Dominant, you’ll be greeted with another cutscene, that’ll immediately launch into a separate set of fights. The first, will see you take on a whole bunch of Ironclad Soldiers, which shouldn’t give you too much to worry about. Remember to use your Scarlet Cyclone when around a lot of enemies and make good use of both Eikon abilities too.

Once they’re done, we’ll have another Boss Fight, this time with your compatriot Tiamat, who is not happy that you won’t slay Shiva’s Dominant.

Mini Boss Fight – Tiamat

Tips for beating: After defeating Shiva’s Dominant, this fight isn’t really much of a challenge. Tiamat’s abilities are well-orchestrated and in many ways, this feels like a throwback to the earlier Tutorial with Murdoch in the courtyard.

Tiamat has a couple of basic attack combos, so be sure to dodge those and hit him with a precision counter if you can. He also has a named move called Enruin, where our foe will charge up his blade and hit a series of slashes in your direction. It’s quite easy to dodge, so be sure to keep spamming the dodge button until he finishes, where you’ll be given a short opening to attack before he starts again.

  Rewards:
27 Wyrrite 1 Meteorite 94 EXP
104 Ability Points 300 Gil

The Hideaway

After this combat-heavy section, you’ll be graced with a long cutscene which eventually opens up to the World Map. A new marker will appear for The Hideaway, so be sure to hold X to be transported there, and finish this chapter.
