One Last Wish

Episode 14 of Doom at Your Service begins with Dong-Kyung apologizing for everything. She and Myul-Mang sit on the rooftop and reflect on their journey and the futility of their actions. As Myul-Mang says himself – they need to accept this now.

When they head back downstairs, they run into Dong-Kyung’s Aunt. There, Myul-Mang mentions how they’re going to prepare for their marriage. Ji-Na shows up not long after with Sun-Kyung, who also find out the news. In a really kind gesture, Sun-Kyung hands over a saving’s account for them both.

Realizing that the end is nigh, both Myul-Mang and Dong-Kyung cry in their own ways. Myul-Mang is at Sonyeoshin’s garden while Dong-Kyung cries with Ji-Na in the hallway. Dong-Kyung has decided to get treatment after all, but she’s going to do this after the wedding.

Well, Sonyeoshin shows up later that day and speaks to Dong-Kyung. She tells the girl that this is out of her hands now and there’s nothing else she can do. She tells Dong-Kyung to live her life well and apologizes – she can’t reverse this.

Elsewhere, Hyun-Kyu decides to concede to Joo-Ik, weeping in the street and telling him not to mess this up.

Myul-Mang and Dong-Kyung share time together, acting like a real couple. This leaves us with one day left until Dong-Kyung passes away. She leaves notes for Sun-Kyung, her Aunt and Ji-Na, telling them all what they mean to her.

Myul-Mang watches as Dong-Kyung sleeps that night. He next heads up to see Sonyeoshin and vows to protect this world and Dong-Kyung no matter what. Sonyeoshin admits she wants to stay alive for a bit longer and see a flower in full bloom.

When Myul-Mang returns to see Dong-Kyung, she decides to wish on not loving any more. After Myul-Mang helps change her mind, she instead decides on what her real wish is – she wants to be taken to the world of doom.

To be fair the world isn’t much different but here, there’s no one around. The hazy fog clings to the air, obscuring the beautiful sun as it sets. As the pair admit that they love each other, the world around them dissolves away as we return to reality.

Myul-Mang admits that he’s wished for happiness and as he reaches out to Dong-Kyung, he disappears from view as time runs out and Dong-Kyung breaks their contract.

The Episode Review

The theme of this episode is acceptance, and it can be seen through both Myul-Mang and Dong-Kyung’s relationship – along with Hyun-Kyu conceding to Joo-Ik. It’s another stage of grief, which this show has done really well in depicting. The acting for all involved has been fantastic and both main actors here have done an excellent job.

The notes Don-Kyung left for the others was beautifully done and definitely an emotionally stirring moment. However, the show is still quite basic and personally I think this story would have been a lot more effective with more emphasis on this countdown.

There are obvious similarities to Goblin but the show doesn’t have the chops to match that drama. Even here, with Dong-Kyung dropping to her knees, it mirrors a very similar scene in Goblin with our main female dropping to her knees on the rooftop and weeping.

Despite those gripes though, Doom at Your Service piles on the waterworks this episode with an emotionally stirring chapter. The entire 65 minutes are packed full of teary moments and the show has done a really good job depicting this so far.

Quite how this one will come to an end next week though remains to be seen – but it’s undoubtedly going to be an emotional one!

  1. I can’t stop sobbing, whenever I watch a tv show I never have a deep emotional reaction but episode 14 was just tragic. With all that they’ve been through I hope in the end they both get a happy ending, the episode pissed me off but I still can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in the series finale.
