A Sign of Affection Season 1 Review

The story of A Sign of Affection centers on a college student who has been embraced by quiet from birth on account of her hearing impairment. She has never left her hometown and seldom engages in conversation with others, aside from her closest friend Rin Fujishiro.

Itsuomi Nagi, a common acquaintance of Rin’s, is silver-haired and multilingual, and she meets him on her journey one day. Yuki is captivated and moved by Itsuomi’s unflinching response to learning of her disability, as well as by his life experiences abroad. Her feelings for him begin to blossom after they separate ways. As they delve into one other’s unique lives, Yuki and Itsuomi discover a whole new universe.

In this humorous romantic comedy, A Sign of Affection, we see how a man’s willingness to open up about his life changes a university student’s perspective on her own. Throughout the course of the coming-of-age anime, themes including the innocence of first love, friendship, and prevailing over both physical and emotional disabilities are explored. The show features a friends-to-lovers trope as the storyline progresses. Moreover, the show also explores the premise of unrequited love through the viewpoint of supporting characters.

This show introduces us to three love stories that develop during the season. Our protagonist, Yuki, and her romantic interest, Itsuomi, play the lead roles. Itsuomi speaks more than one language, whereas Yuki has trouble hearing. Despite their differences, the two are enamored with one another and able to find points of commonality. We get a glimpse of Rin, Yuki’s best friend, and Kyouya, her love interest’s love story as well. The romantic tale between these two characters is also touching and enjoyable. Although the show doesn’t focus on them as much, we also see Shin and Emma’s love blossom. 

The plot of the show is extremely touching and heartwarming, and it continues to get better and more moving as the episodes progress. When you watch the show, the messages it conveys linger in your mind for a considerable time after the show has ended. In addition to providing you with a great deal of things to contemplate, the characters and the arcs they go through are quite engaging. When we look closely, we can observe that the show depicts three distinct types of deafness: Yuki, who is medically deaf; Emma, who is symbolically deaf to Itsuomi’s emotions; and Shin, who is actively defeaning his heart’s desires. The way in which these different types of deafness are portrayed in the show is certainly deserving of praise.

There is a great deal of complexity and depth to the characters and their arcs, which is what makes the story so engaging. You can’t help but root for the show’s charming and sympathetic characters, and also the characters who pose as antagonists to the central characters. The arcs that the characters go through are another area where the show shines. The protagonists, Yuki and Itsuomi, are easy to root for, but even the more complex characters, like Emma and Oushi, are interesting. Even though you know they’re meant to be the antagonists, the writers manage to make you care about them nevertheless.

We are also introduced to a minor character, Oushi, who has had a crush on Yuki. Oushi is seen having a difficult time coming to terms with the fact that Yuki is dating Itsuomi. The show has an exceptional knack for humanizing its characters and making us empathize with them, and this plot thread is no different. We are able to see things through Oushi’s lens, and we can’t help but feel sorry for him.

The brilliant use of sound effects, stunning and elegant visuals, and intricate and well-thought-out character design all contribute to the show’s storyline. The creator has also done an excellent job of crafting the anime’s setting so that it enhances the plot. Its gentle pastels and cozy tones go wonderfully with the plot. Furthermore, the way the volume drops when we listen to things from Yuki’s point of view and how, in other places, returning to normalcy allows us to fully immerse ourselves in her worldview and comprehend things from her point of view. Because of these factors, the quality of the anime is improved even further, making it a visual treat for those who enjoy watching anime.

Except for Oushi, we get to see where all of our characters end up in the final episode, and it does a great job of tying everything together. The show stays true to its strengths—the characters and their journeys. Unlike most of our characters, we don’t learn much about Oushi’s romantic prospects. It would have been fantastic if the show had given Oushi more screen time because his character was incredibly fascinating. All of the other characters, from the major ones to the minor ones, were well-developed and portrayed in the show, and it was easy to relate to and empathize with them.

All things considered, the anime is a pleasant, humorous, and heartwarming experience. It has a storyline that has been carefully thought out, and it incorporates characters that are nuanced and well-developed. Additionally, the character designs, visuals, and sound effects are all of the highest quality, which further contributes to the anime’s standing as an absolute delight to watch.
