What We Do in the Shadows – Season 2 Episode 2 Recap & Review

I Ain’t Afraid Of No Ghosts

What We Do In The Shadows returns for a follow-up slice of comedy after the season 2 premiere. Although not quite as strong as the previous episode, there’s enough here to make for a really enjoyable 20 minutes nonetheless. With a returning Jeff and lots of cleverly written jokes once more, Shadows continues to show off its strong writing.

“We’ve got ghosts”. Yep, it’s ghosts this time around and our trio of vampires find themselves contemplating how to deal with this, with Laszlo, Nandor and Colin Robinson doubting their existence. The ghost itself happens to be Jeff and as Nadja speaks to him, the rest of the gang finally see his true identity where he reveals that he’s there to resolve his unfinished business.

The group perform another seance and in doing so, end up seeing their ghostly selves as they materialize infront of them. Unfortunately Nandor can’t remember how to speak his native tongue beyond Good Morning. As he talks to his ghost, the two Nandors manage to bond over a painting of his horse, John. Nandor’s unfinished business happens to be reuniting with him.

Meanwhile, Nadja’s ghost talks to Nadja about her current state of affairs and how her ghost is unable to rest given she isn’t doing anything with her life right now. She decides to stick around for a bit and possesses a doll. Laszlo and his ghost talk about his current ghostly situation and that happens to be relating to relieving his sexual tension… and as we cut forward in time we see that Lazlo has seemingly done just that.

Colin finishes the episode by calling his Grandmother back from the dead. With his on-running joke surrounding “up dog”, he finally gets to see this through to its conclusion. Hilariously, he then ends the meeting with his deceased relative by blowing out the candle and leaving the room, where the episode ends.

With a simple story layered with interesting character developments, What We Do In The Shadows does well with its second episode, allowing our trio of vampires to have their own individual scenes before bringing things full circle at the end with Colin. Throughout the episode are numerous memorable jokes and quite what will happen now that Nadja’s ghost is possessing this doll remains to be seen.

For now though, Shadows gets off to a really promising start and certainly looks to be following suit with its first season after a duo of strong episodes.
