The Escape of the Seven is a South Korean mystery and thriller drama that follows the disappearance of Bang Da-mi and the seven people involved with her case. The seven villains will do anything to hide the truth behind Bang Da-mi’s disappearance, creating a wall of lies that pile up with each additional episode.

The script of The Escape of The Seven is unsettling and full of many gaping plot holes. The lack of logic and inconsistencies in the scriptwriting disrupts a viewer’s immersion in the storyline. The drama starts strong, giving the audience someone to stand behind. However, the script turns to an exhausting overload of wickedness.

The script is willing to push any boundary, including lies, betrayal, murder, physical assault, school bullying, and inhumane horror, just to name a few. The themes do not resonate with viewers. It is an excess of provocative elements to create buzz. However, these over-the-top elements become the script’s weak points.

Conversely, The Escape of the Seven criticises fake news and explores the entertainment industry’s dark side. The physical and mental suffering that Bang Da-mi endures is too distressing to watch. This gives the viewers a reason to root for the initial premise of his adoptive father seeking revenge for her unjust death.

However, as the episodes progress, this plot is forgotten, making the second half of the series difficult to watch. The writer abandons the ironclad revenge for unjust death to an absurd switched-at-birth scenario.

The characters in The Escape of the Seven are exasperating. Their villainess is probably perfectly written, and their presence on the screen constantly infuriates. Chairman Bang is a greedy Chaebol worth billions of dollars but without a family to inherit his fortune. He values his money above everything else and is selfish, greedy, and ruthless.

Bang Da-mi is pitiful, agreeable, and a wrong judge of character. Her birth mother, Geum La-hui, is the epitome of evil. She is narcissistic, greedy, inhumane, and violent. She would stop at nothing to become rich, including murder. Cha Ju-ran is agreeable and greedy. She goes along with every evil plan and does not have a conscience.

Nam Chul-woo is timid, greedy, and a drug addict. He would do anything as long as he gets paid. Yang Jin-mo is also agreeable and timid. He is willing to betray and step on anyone to get the job assigned to him done. He is not assertive and quickly jumps between masters.

Han Mo-ne is a sociopath and a pathological liar. She is greedy, selfish, and a traitor who is loyal to herself. Go Myoung-ji is a social climber and uses any corrupt means to maintain the façade of wealth. Mathew Lee/ Shim Jun-seok is a psychopath. He is ruthless, violent, greedy, vengeful, and a killer. Min Do-hyuk’s main nemesis is pitiful, weak, agreeable, and susceptible but loyal.

Another loyal support character is Kang Ki-tak. He is assertive, kind, helpful, and trustworthy. The series has many supporting cast members coming together perfectly to support the main characters.

The Escape of the Seven is generally a melodramatic drama that is impossible to watch. There is no logic to the script. It is laden with absurd twists and turns that will give you a headache in frustration. There is no limit to what the villains can do for their selfish gain. Their main drive is wealth and money; to get that which is not theirs, they will tear at each other and anyone around them to succeed.

Ultimately, the only award we will be willing to give this show is the worst K-drama of the year. In this, it is in a league of its own.
