Survival of the Thickest – Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Review

Keep Your Plants Watered, Bitch

In episode 1 of Survival of the Thickest, Mavis Beaumont and her reliable photographer partner are living the dream. Their clients frequently comment on how well she does her job. She has been advancing in her professional life and has been in a relationship for a while with Jacque, a professional photographer with whom she works.

In order for Mavis to land her initial lead styling contract, Jacque further recommends Mavis to Sydney Dubois of Essence. Mavis, according to Sydney, is prepared, and everything works according to plan.

That said, things go south when she discovers her partner, Jacque, having an affair with a model inside their luxurious flat. Mavis makes the decision to leave, while broken and grieving. She locates a small flat in Brooklyn with the assistance of her dedicated friends Khalil and Mavey. However, she is required to share the place with a stranger by the name of Jade.

Mavis receives encouragement from her close companions, who offer her courage in every capacity possible. She strives not to let recent changes in her once-steady and ideal life get in the way of that. In order to find pleasure in those brief instances on one of her bad days, Mavis allows her impulses to win and she engages in a fling.

She then gets a call to schedule an interview. Mavis thinks about rejecting the chance to shine at Essence even after Khalil’s explanation of how doing so can drastically alter her life. Thereafter, she steps down after finding out that Jacque will be her co-worker. After years of arduous work, she will essentially have to start from scratch as a stylist once more.

The Episode Review

Mavis, the primary protagonist, is introduced to us in episode 1 of Survival of the Thickest. We learn about the incidents that occurred in her life. Furthermore, the show sheds light on her ex-boyfriend and two close friends.

The episode goes out of its way to promote an unhealthy lifestyle. Not only is our protagonist unhealthy, but she also constantly shades healthy women. While her partner’s cheating is awful, packaging something clearly unhealthy and selling it to us with an emotional backstory is certainly unacceptable.

The characters in the show appear shallow, insufferable, and difficult to connect with. To make matters worse, the plot isn’t particularly compelling. Hopefully, things pick up from here, but the episode is mediocre at best.
