A Familiar Face
As soon as you enter the Mountain Trail, we’ll be back at the start of the game. With the flashback section now completed, you’ll awaken at the campfire telling stories about the past. However, there’s some rustling in the bushes behind you. Is it an enemy? A big boss? Nope, it’s… Garl!
The trio are reunited once more, hooray! Garl was busy preparing and gathering his equipment when the pair returned to Mooncradle. Anyone else convinced that Garl had been kidnapped or hurt by the Headmaster, given his shifty behaviour at this point? Anyway, I digress.
Garl has been preparing all this time for this meeting – and he’s got some useful tricks up his sleeve. With Garl now joining the group, he can cook for the pair. At campfires, any ingredients gathered can be combined and turned into food items that restore MP, HP or both. His build is also somewhat of a healing tank, with his Nourish skill cooking on-the-fly in battle for the group.
Trails in the Mist
After a brief cooking tutorial, head north and save. You’ll definitely want to enter the cave to the left of the path heading up the cliff face.
Inside are a couple of spiked enemies. Quickly dispatch them and climb up the rock. At the top, inside the chest, is 1x Abacus. This is an incredibly useful Accessory as it allows you to see the HP for every non-boss enemy!
Head back outside and climb up the rock wall. Weave through the trees to the left and open the chest. Inside is 1x Basic Armor. Unroll the ladder on the right and then progress over the wooden bridge to the top right of this platform. You can choose to go down the unrolled ladder and gather 2x wheat if you want too.
Just before you do though, you’ll be ambushed by a couple of enemies called Rochevre. These are the mossy-stony rams we saw earlier in the game. Defeat them, and on we go!
After heading over the bridge, wind down the stairs but at the midway point, jump down the platform and collect some peppers. There’s a number of wooden bridges here too, and just north of that, be sure to collect 2x Cabbage.
Keep winding around this linear pathway and you’ll come across 2 Wanderer enemies. Dispatch these, hop over the platform, unroll the ladder and keep climbing up.
After hopping over a rock bridge that crumbles when you approach, take a detour to the left to hop down and grab some peppers. When you’re ready, go north over another wooden bridge and into the cave.
Inside is a campfire and a save point. Be sure to cook up some grub from the items you’ve collected, with Roast Sandwich and Basic Salad being the two recommended dishes here!
There’s also a merchant too, so be sure to spend your gold on new equipment. It’s also worth selling any valuable ores you’ve gained up until this point as well!
When you’re ready, climb up the wall and back outside again. After defeating the trio of enemies patrolling, hop down the walls and you’ll notice that there’s some mist showing up in the levels. There’s also a chest hidden here too, with: “Recipe: Chaudree” inside.
Climb up the wall to the left and then hop over the rock platforms all the way to the right. At the top of this area, unroll the ladder after defeating the enemies. Take a left here and jump over the rock platforms surrounded in mist. No need to jump down and explore below the platforms though as there’s nothing to collect.
On the other side, climb up the rock wall, collect 2x Cabbage and then take a right. Here, you’ll find a tightrope. On the other side is another of those Rochevre enemies. Once you’ve defeated that, unroll the ladder to the right and head up the rock wall. Don’t worry about the strange cave to the left of the waterfall, we can’t access this yet!
Meeting The Mist
Climb over the rock wall and you’ll be at the top of the waterfall. Keep progressing forward and we’ll be greeted to the Elder Mist! He’ll bestow a new skill for you, allowing you to “use magic without using magic”. This new technique is called Live Mana and is available in every battle from now on.
Basically, upon attacking enemies, they’ll spill mana droplets in battle. Collecting these allow you to boost your attacks, both for magic and for physical attacks.
When Elder Mist is finished talking, he’ll guide you up to the trials and the next chapter of the game.
