Will there be an animated Diary of a Wimpy Kid 4? Here’s what we know about a sequel:

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 4

Currently streaming on Disney+ is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Christmas Cabin Fever, the third animated movie to be adapted from Jeff Kinney’s popular book series. It’s an enjoyable movie, as we mentioned in our review, and is certainly worth a watch if you want to teach your children some valuable lessons about the Christmas season.

On top of the animated adaptations, there are currently 4 live-action movies based on Kinney’s books. We don’t know if there will be a 5th live-action adventure for the book series’ protagonist, Greg Heffley, but there are hopes for a 4th animated movie.

Here’s what we know about an animated sequel:

What is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Christmas Cabin Fever about?

The latest Wimpy Kid movie is based on the 6th book in Jeff Kinney’s series and tells the story of Greg Heffley’s attempts to get himself on Santa’s nice list.

His reason for this is a new video game console that he desperately wants to get his hands on. However, despite his best intentions, he worries he might be on Santa’s naughty list (with no chance of getting the console) after accidentally destroying a snow plough with a rolling snowman.

Does Greg get the video game console? We aren’t going to reveal the answer here but if you would like to know more about the movie, check out our Ending Explained article for insight into the movie’s plot and conclusion.

Will there be another animated sequel?

According to the Wimpy Kid Wiki page, an adaptation of The Last Straw, the third book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, is currently in the works. We don’t have any concrete information on when this might be released but we wouldn’t be surprised if it landed on Disney+ sometime in 2024.

What could the sequel be about?

If the next film is based on The Last Straw, you can expect the plotline to follow the story told within the source material.

Here’s the synopsis for the book:

“Let’s face it: Greg Heffley will never change his wimpy ways. Somebody just needs to explain that to Greg’s father. You see, Frank Heffley thinks he can get his son to toughen up, and he enlists Greg in organized sports and other “manly” endeavors. Of course, Greg is easily able to sidestep his father’s efforts to change him. But when Greg’s dad threatens to send him to the military academy, Greg realizes he has to shape up… or get shipped out.” (source)

There’s a chance other books in the series will also be adapted into films but as is the case with The Last Straw, we don’t have definite information on when they might be released. We will update this page once we know more.
