Jujutsu Kaisen – Season 2 Episode 9 Recap & Review

Shibuya Incident – Gate, Open

Episode 9 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 begins with someone interviewing several staff and students about what Satoru Gojo means to them. We cut to a scene of Satoru with two cursed spirits’ heads in his hands. Sometime before that shot, Satoru challenges Jogo, Hanami, and Choso and they fight. Despite their effort, Satoru annihilates Hanami in front of Jogo. We cut to Getou explaining what the Prison Realm is to his comrades. He says it serves as a barrier, the embodiment of Genshin, and can seal almost anything.

Getou says once its door opens, its seal’s effective range is within a radius of four meters. He says it’s important they keep Satgoru within that range for one minute. Jogo confronts Getou because he doesn’t trust him, but Getou says it’ll be fine. In the present, Jogo tries to flee from Satoru. His attempts fail so he resorts to being on the offensive and urges Choso to assist him. Satoru analyzes his situation and realizes he can’t save all the humans present in the area.

However, he’s deadset on exorcising all the cursed spirits here. Jogo questions if the door’s ready yet, but Getou says it’s far from it. He urges Jogo and Choso to make Satoru feel more tense. Meanwhile, the person Yuji interrogated in the previous chapter becomes a transfigured human. Moreover, the train arrives signaling to Jogo that everything is going swimmingly. Several beasts exit the train and start eating people in Satoru’s area. Mahito jumps out of the vehicle and taunts Satoru.

Choso and Mahito go on a killing spree while Jogo continues fighting Satoru. Mahito examines Satoru and knows he’s colder than Yuji. With all the living and dead people around him, Mahito knows Satoru will snap soon and unleash his Unlimited Void. If he does, he’ll end up killing everyone present in the area. Satoru unleashes a 0.2-second Unlimited Void. The narrator explains that Satoru used this because it wouldn’t turn non-sorcerers into invalids or leave them with after-effects.

Further, during the 0.2-second Unlimited Void, half a year’s worth of intel is poured into non-sorcerers brains, including transfigured humans. The narrator states the humans on the fifth-floor underground area successfully returned to society two months later. An Unlimited Void at this level could wake up special-grade cursed spirits at the moment so Satour opted to attack the transfigured humans. We transition to the scene from earlier featuring Satoru.

The narrator says he killed a thousand transfigured humans in the area. in 299 seconds. Satoru notices a box on the ground. Getou opens the Prison Realm and greets Satoru. Satoru questions if it’s really Getou in front of him as he recalls moments of their time at Jujutsu High. The box transforms into a type of cursed spirit and binds itself to Satoru. Satoru worries it might be it for him because of all the energy he’s used. Satoru uncovers that the Getou in front of him isn’t the real one, which turns out to be the case.

The doppelganger says the seal will be lifted in about a thousand years. The person wishes Satoru well and hopes to see him again in the new world. We cut to Ui Ui, Mei Mei, and Yuji.

The episode closes with someone informing Yuji that Satoru has been sealed away.

The Episode Review

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2’s ninth episode was a spectacle for the eyes but had a rough ending for Satoru fans. It appears he’ll be away from the plot for some time now that he’s been sealed away. This is a brilliant strategy on the author’s part as it’ll allow the other characters, including our protagonist, Yuji, to get more development time.

The animation continues to shine with this anime. From its choreography to its stills, everything culminates for a visual feast that’s far from lackluster. Moreover, this episode did a great job of showcasing how different Satoru is from Yuji from an expositional and visual standpoint. Seeing Satoru scurry across the area slaughtering transfigured humans and being okay with humans dying was chilling.

While the episode was great, some bits were a tad confusing to follow and needed a proper explanation. Besides that, this was another fun episode of this anime’s second season. It sets fans up for more thrilling shenanigans ahead and nerfs our heroes’ advantage over their enemies with Satoru being out of commission (for now). I’m looking forward to seeing how the others respond to this news, and what our heroes plan to do to protect humanity or save Satoru from his entrapment.
