Grey’s Anatomy – Season 20 Episode 6 “The Marathon Continues” Recap & Review

The Marathon Continues

Episode 6 kicks off with Dr. Bailey handing out wellness kits to the interns, asking them to prioritize their own well-being while juggling patient care. Bailey starts to discuss some paperwork, but the interns have to dash as their pagers go off.

Yasuda and Teddy attend to Mr. Jimenez, a prison inmate rushed to the hospital for suspected tuberculosis. Teddy listens to his chest, requesting the removal of handcuffs, while Yasuda notices Jimenez’s tattoos. However, tests reveal a cancer that has spread extensively to his liver, spine, pelvis, adrenal glands, and more.

It’s an advanced stage where surgery is no longer an option. Yasuda breaks the news gently to Jimenez and explains that his condition is terminal, with only a few months left. While medication could extend his life by four to six months, it would be incredibly painful. Jimenez declines the treatment, opting to live his final months in peace.

Yasuda suggests a clinical trial, but Teddy says no, believing that understanding and alleviating Jimenez’s pain is the best course of action right now. As Jeminez is being transported back to the prison, Ndugu informs him that he has sent the required documentation for  Jimenez’s compassionate release application.

On the flip side, Jules updates everyone on Misty Valentine’s situation. Misty, a young girl who had an above-the-knee amputation two years ago due to a motor vehicle accident (MVC), is now experiencing severe pain from the socket that connects her residual limb to her prosthesis, affecting her mobility and quality of life.

Despite her accident, Misty’s parents still believe she can achieve her dream of competing in a century race for the Grand Prix in Seattle next year. The link suggests a revision of Misty’s residual limb in hopes of improving the fit of her prosthesis, easing her pain, and enhancing her mobility. However, Catherine Fox makes it clear that she needs Misty to walk again without pain.

Link comes up with the idea of osseointegration, which involves implanting a titanium rod into Misty’s bone and attaching it to her prosthesis.Beltran isn’t too keen on the idea, thinking Misty is still too young. She also thinks that Link is trying to impress Catherine Fox by suggesting a bold surgery. Beltran is on board with the surgery, but only if Misty gives the thumbs up.

Link explains the procedure to Misty and her parents, and they’re on board too. The surgery begins but soon hits a road bump. To make the prosthesis work, Link needs to take more of Misty’s femur. He discusses this with Misty’s parents, and they give the green light. The operation goes well and Misty couldn’t be more happy to know that she’ll be able to walk and cycle again without any shooting pain in her heart.

As things unfold, Webber goes to check on Dorian, a patient battling anemia. The constant tests and beeping machines are driving Dorian up the wall, and he’s itching to head home. Simon tries to draw some blood for tests, but Dorian kicks him out, frustrated. Warren, however, asks Simon to keep trying as Dorian’s life depends on those blood results.

The situation takes a serious turn when Dorian crashes and starts puking blood. Turns out, Dorian is suffering from an upper GI bleed from an ulcer. Thanks to Webber’s skills, Dorian pulls through. When he wakes up, Dorian realizes the doctors are just trying to help and agrees to cooperate.

The Episode Review

Episode 6 was a rollercoaster of second chances and tough decisions. Jeminez had been stuck behind bars for over four decades, missing out on life’s simple pleasures and battling cancer without much help. The system let him down but when he landed in Grey Sloan Hospital, Yaduda could see the pain he’d endured all those years.

She went all out and got him a chocolate blueberry cake, something he hadn’t tasted in 40 years! Meanwhile, Misty’s dreams took a hit when she lost a leg. Everyone, including Beltran, was playing it safe, suggesting the standard procedure. But not Link.

He took a bold gamble because he refused to let Misty give up on her dreams. Even if it meant risking it all, Link went ahead with the risky procedure, giving Misty a shot at a second chance. It was a risky move, but Link knew that sometimes you have to roll the dice to make things right.
