Goodbye Earth – K-drama Episode 9 Recap & Review

Silver Lining

Goodbye Earth episode 9 starts with a flashback to 557 days before the asteroid hit. Min-ho was excited to get an autograph from Yoon-sang, his role model. Father Baek had joined a few of his parishioners for a few drinks and a good time. Se-kyung was excited about her new soccer team, wedding, and life. Everyone held Father Baek in high reverence.

Presently, there have 153 days before the asteroid hits. Sister Chae-hwan secretly meets with Oktokki to exchange information. She shows him the video of Father Baek leaving the church that fateful day with Manager Im. Oktokki recognises one of the addresses from the sister’s phone and she implores him to tell In-ah everything.

Elsewhere, In-ah is preoccupied with contacting Se-kyung and Yoon-sang to relay the information. She sends a few of her soldiers to back up her friends. Meanwhile, Se-kyung and Yoon-sang arrive at the training centre and are allowed to meet with Father Baek.

The priest still has his charming aura and acts as if nothing is wrong. He welcomes the couple warmly, sharing some Christian teachings and advising them to confess. They must be selling audacity for free in this training centre! Se-kyung spitefully confesses to being a murderer, and Father Baek doesn’t miss a beat. He preaches of God’s forgiveness and Se-kyung says she has no desire to repent.

Father Baek turns his attention to Yoon-sang and says God has spoken to him about the couple’s purpose. Se-kyung loses her cool, and Yoon-sang tries to calm her down. He directly asks the priest to stop hiding at the training centre and apologise to the church. In turn, Father Baek explains that Yoon-sang needs to expand his horizon. The priest refuses to take any accountability and lacks empathy.

As the couple try to reason with the heartless priest, he gets a call from Mrs Kim’s son. The soldiers In-ah sent are at the gate, and the priest is advised to stick to the original plan. Mrs Kim’s son notes they have a second plan if things go awry. The priest bids the two goodbye and promises to rescue Yoon-sang on D-day. He also talks about how the best servants are those who go. These words haunt Yoon-sang. The military soldiers escort the couple out.

At Mrs Kim’s house, Oktokki asks his grandmother not to leave him. She assures him that she can abandon her son but not her grandson. At the church, Sung-jae fasts and prays for guidance and strength. Meanwhile, the kids revisit the abandoned US military base and are surprised when US soldiers arrive and start cycling their planes all over the town. In-ah and Hyun-jae start keeping tabs on the base. They all suspect that the elitists will use the US military base to escape. Sister Chae-hwan pressures Sung-jae to take affirmative action, but he is more interested in hearing what Father Baek said to Yoon-sang. He still has hope for the older priest.

Later, Myeong-ok talks to Se-kyung about In-ah’s older brother In-seong and his death. In-seong died downtown while looking for food. The gang members senselessly murdered him for fun. Initially, Myeong-ok was disappointed that In-ah didn’t investigate the case more deeply. However, with the gang members dying in mysterious ways, she wonders if In-ah took revenge. Se-kyung assures her that In-ah is a hero willing to protect her loved ones at all costs. Myeong-ok is half-heartedly relieved that In-ah took revenge but worries for her daughter’s soul too.

At the military, In-ah continues to get backlash for her latest operation and the missing operation. Her superiors are keeping a close eye on her and searching their base. In a flashback, we see In-ah going against the Battalion Commander’s order and chasing the rebel leaders. She didn’t want them to get away scot-free. Her insubordination led to numerous soldiers dying and others injured.

In a concerning turn of events, Hyeon-sik gets a gun for Ha-yool, and she gives him a USB filled with fake links to porn content. Ha-yool heads home and tries to commit suicide in front of her parents. Luckily, Hyeon-sik had not loaded the gun. She drops the gun and runs out to meet Se-kyung, who comforts her.

As Yoon-sang watches Se-kyung deal with Ha-yool he starts to understand her more. He has been contemplating Father Baek’s words and is conflicted.

After her superiors leave, In-ah meets with her former Battalion Commander to pick up supplies and talk to him about JIU. The JIU is trying to blame the military soldiers for the missing ammunition. In-ah’s recent ambush at the training centre gave them a reason to take away all their weapons. Commander Choi thinks it is a sign that they are leaving soon. In-ah tries to get in touch with the military base, but they refuse to tell her anything. She asks Sergeant Min-ji to take some snacks to the US military force and use the chance to look arround.

Speaking of the training centre, Jeong-ah calls for a meeting and announces a change of plans. She tells the members that they will leave soon, but first, they must retrieve their kids. She gives a delusional speech about how they are God’s chosen and will soon arrive at a new heaven. Jeong-ah sends the Toittech CEO to get the kids.

As for the children rescued from the training centre, JIU tries to impose their jurisdiction to take the kids into their custody. However, the doctors and police refuse to give in. Young-ji tries to be her brother’s guardian as he is sick and needs surgery.

In the meantime, Commander Choi sets a plan in motion, as discussed with In-ah. He heads to the church to set up a broadcasting station. In-ah and her group try to figure out the elitists’ escape plan. Se-kyung remembers that Father Baek promised to pick up Yoon-sang one hour before departure. The emergency airstrip near the training centre likely is where the plane will land and take off. They agree to keep watch at the church, and Sung-jae takes the first shift.

Yoon-sang and Se-kyung head home. Once they are home, the two finally have an honest talk. Se-kyung admits to killing the gang members and says she is not worthy of being saved. She knows she is only alive because they still want Yoon-sang. She understands that Yoon-sang needs her but she argues she won’t be happy. She begs him to leave her behind and take the kids.

All her life, she has dedicated herself to the children. She can’t let the remaining kids die, and she can’t forget how the others were killed. Yoon-sang is conflicted as he refuses to give her up. Ultimately, they cry as they embrace. It was obvious from the start that Yoon-sang would choose to stay, but this scene is still moving and gives us the certainty that these two will stick it out until the fiery end.

As the night drags on, Myeong-ok gets sentimental looking at old photos of her children. The planes keep everyone from getting enough sleep as they circle back and forth.

The Episode Review

The scene where Yoon-sang and Se-kyung finally talk about whether Yoon-sang is leaving or staying is entrancing. The actors outdid themselves and portrayed all their emotions in a way that tugged at our hearts and made us root for them.

As D-day gets closer, we can’t help but wonder if In-ah and her group will be able to save the kids by hijacking the elitists’ plane. That is the only possible play card they have. We can’t wait to see how this supposed trip to a new heaven unfolds, so let’s check out the next chapter.
