Goodbye Earth – K-drama Episode 4 Recap & Review

Felix Culpa

Goodbye Earth episode 4 picks up where we left off, with Se-kyung hurrying to save So-min. She finds So-min being held by two goons demanding maintenance money. Se-kyung gives up everything in her purse and takes So-min. One of the goons relays a message from Jong-su’s men that Se-kyung should buy a new bike. She also repeats the message left on the picture. Se-kyung returns So-min to a worried Gye-hyang.

Elsewhere, Yoon-sang’s homecoming party gets livelier as the guests dance to music and drink. However, In-ah remains on alert and worried about Se-kyung. Mi-ryeong calls it a night and gifts the kids two wine bottles to continue enjoying the night. A few minutes later, Se-kyung returns and explains the car ran out of gas and she left it at the church.

She, Yoon-sang, In-ah and Sung-jae head back to her apartment and continue to drink. Se-kyung assures In-ah that she is okay, but the latter doesn’t buy it. Throughout the night, Se-kyung seems preoccupied while In-ah wonders if the hiking boots in Se-kyung’s house have the same pattern as the footprint she found at Jong-su’s house.

As the night deepens, In-ah and Sung-jae take their leave. Sung-jae wanted to stay longer and drink homemade wine, but In-ah insists. She takes him to a different side of town where most criminals operate. She hopes his influence will help her get some information, but Sun-jae says Father Baek would be the best option.

Even with an ongoing curfew, many people in that town continue to party. The brothels are making bank and Hyeon-sik is taking bribes from the business owners. While Father Sung-jae is distracted talking to one vendor, In-ah secretly meets with her former Battalion Commander, who gives her intel on how the brothels work. The commander believes that the JIU is protecting the criminals in town. Most of the criminals are those who escaped prison. The money made from the town is being funnelled elsewhere, but no one knows about it.

Back at Se-kyung’s house, Yoon-sang is injured while cleaning the wine glasses. Se-kyung moves to help him, but he insists on treating his wound alone. It suddenly becomes awkward. In the military camp, Joo-yeon’s chicken project is doing well and is a success. In-ah asks for a one-on-one with every sergeant. During her meeting with Hyeon-sik, she subtly warns him to cut ties with the criminals and stop taking bribes. She tries to encourage him to file for discharge. Of course, Hyeon-sik doesn’t get the subtle threat.

Away from the camp, the kids try to understand what is happening. Ha-yool mentions she plans to convince Hyeon-sik to get her a gun. Jin-seo is worried, as Hyeon-sik had asked for dirty videos in exchange for his help.

Concurrently, Soo-geum and Dae-chan meet to discuss their options. Time is running out, and they need to secure a space in the Toittech bunker. Dae-chan explains he has no money. As the two argue, Yoon-sang enters the store. Soo-geum starts to interrogate him on how he made it into the country.

At Se-kyung’s office, she is surprised to find a new bicycle. She also gets a message informing her that the keys will be given to her personally. The stalker finally sets a meeting date and time. Although her colleagues are excited and happy for her, Se-kyung is more nervous than ever. She calls In-ah and explains everything. The two then plan a way to confront the stalker safely.

On the other side of town, Yoon-sang and Sung-jae play tennis and catch up. Yoon-sang admits that he is struggling to understand Se-kyung. The Father asks him to be patient with Se-kyung. Their conversation is interrupted by Sister Chae-hwan. It turns out the Clergy want answers about Father Baek’s disappearance. On his way home, Yoon-sang collects wildflowers for Se-kyung.

Later that night, In-ah asks a different captain to handle the nightly inspection for her. She gets ready to help Se-kyung, who is set to meet with her stalker that night. Se-kyung also heads into the substations as planned. Her stalker watches her from the CCTV and directs her towards the hidden bike keys.

He fails to notice In-ah enter through another opening, and she takes him by surprise. She orders him at gunpoint to jump into the water and grab the keys. As expected, the man tries to fight her off, but she is no match for him. The minute he gets into the water and tries to lunge at In-ah again, Se-kyung electrocutes him. He dies instantly.

In-ah also organised for her soldiers to simultaneously attack the brothels in the town and take down the gang leaders. The operation is successful, and they save the girls that were kidnapped by the gang. JIU tries to take the victims, but the Deputy Mayor refuses. She asks JIU to focus on dealing properly with the suspects.

In-ah drives Se-kyung home in silence. She advises Se-kyung to take Yoon-sang and leave. She feels Se-kyung will be safe away, but the latter is reluctant to leave. In-ah doesn’t understand why Se-kyung is endangering her life at every turn. Upon arriving home, Se-kyung finds Yoon-sang waiting for her with a bouquet of wildflowers in his hand. She starts tearing up.

The Episode Review

At this point, we barely care about the asteroid dropping in a few days. We are more immersed in the current events in Se-kyung and the lives of others. In-ah is a good friend; she risked her career to save her friend. Hopefully, this will be the last time we hear of Jong-su and his men. Good riddance to them and their goons.

We can’t help but worry about Ha-yool. Why is she so intent on buying a gun? Nothing good will come from making a deal with someone like Hyeon-sik. He is a sickening, greedy man who doesn’t deserve to wear the soldier’s uniform. What will he do now that his cash cow has been killed by In-ah’s move to take down the gangs?

Lastly, we hope Se-kyung and Yoon-sang will be honest and address their issues head-on. With only a few days left before the asteroid lands, there is no time to dillydally.
