Goodbye Earth – K-drama Episode 3 Recap & Review

I Have Butterflies

Goodbye Earth episode 3 picks up with Se-kyung welcoming Yoon-sang home. She is happy and in disbelief at the same time. He says the cops also found it strange that he returned. He seems tired and falls asleep, and Se-kyung hurries to prepare food for him. Se-kyung notices scars on his back as she covers him with a blanket. She uses this opportunity to go to his apartment next door and get rid of evidence.

Meanwhile, Hae-chan continues to save some food, hoping for their mom’s return. In a flashback, we see how she and her younger brother, Woo-chan, desperately searched for their mom during the early days of the news. Everything was chaotic, and it was at this time that Mi-ryeong’s son was kidnapped and killed.

At present, she is still mourning her son and is surprised when Se-kyung drops by and asks for a favour. Se-kyung explains that Yoon-sang is back and that she needs some food supplies. Everyone is excited to hear about Yoon-sang’s return. Father Sung-jae is the most excited and drops by the house to see him even though Se-kyung clearly says that Yoon-sang needs to rest.

In the meantime, the kids cheer on each other and openly discuss their reflective struggles. Jin-seo explains that he is not mad at his mom for abandoning them, while Ha-yool doesn’t care if she dies as long as she is with her friends. At the same time, Jin-seo does his best to apologise to the neighbours for his dad’s loud meetings at night.

At the military camp, the soldiers get excited after live chickens show up in their gardens. Joo-yeon makes it her mission to rear the chickens. She makes an official request, which is quickly approved. She plans to rear the chickens and help them hatch chicks. In the long run, the military will have sufficient protein.

Away from the military, the Deputy Mayor, Im Seon-Ju, advocates for her community in a government hearing. She demands to know what is being done to evacuate people and access quickly depleting resources. Some citizens watch the news, but they feel the situation is helpless. Mi-ryeong is one of those who have given up, and she finds her husband’s efforts to find different resources to be a waste.

Unlike Mi-ryeong, Gye-hyang is full of hope that something will work out. Against So-min’s wish, she attends the Toittech event with Dae-han and Soo-geun. The CEO quickly gives them hope before mentioning the atrocious price it will take to book a seat. He also adds that only 50 people will be accepted, and they will only take payments in dollars of gold. According to the CEO, the down-payment should be made in two days. Many people start complaining but he says they are not being forced to buy the tickets.

Outside the event, Sang-woo( Jin-seo’s dad) continues to rally people against the CEO. He and his men break into the event, and a fight ensues. The police, goons and Sang-woo’s team mercilessly go after each other.

Away from the chaos, Yoon-sang wakes up after having a nightmare and heads to his apartment. He starts cleaning up, and an excited Sung-jae drops by to welcome him home. Of course, Sung-jae has questions, and so do we! Yoon-sang is elusive in his answers, and Sung-jae drops the topic. In a flashback, we learn that Yoon-sang was captured and tortured for information. He currently has something in his chest that keeps flickering. It is probably a tracker inserted under his ribs.

After the failed event, Soo-geun heads home, and his wife treats his injury. He tries to order Ha-yool to avoid Jin-seo, but she refuses. On the other hand, So-min chastises her mom for attending the event.

As night draws by, Se-kyung finds her bicycle trashed and a picture of her and the kids. On the picture, there is a message saying,” I will make things fun for you!” Although shaken, Se-kyung walks home and tries to look happy in front of Yoon-sang. They passionately kiss, and Yoon-sang stays over for the night. He senses something is wrong and says he will wait until she is ready to tell him.

The next morning, the elderly villagers meet at the garden and continue gossiping as they plant. They find it hard to believe Yoon-sang is back. However, this gives them hope that they can still escape South Korea. At the same time, So-min gets a threat from one of the gang members. She is worried about her cousins, who are currently staying with them. She visits Se-kyung at her office and asks her to stay alert. So-min shows her the threatening messages, and Se-kyung is touched that the kid came to warn her.

Later that night, a few of Yoon-sang and Se-kyung’s friends meet for dinner to celebrate his return. In-ah is still concerned about Se-kyung and tries to check in. Yoon-sang gives a watered-down version of how he made it out of America. Mi-ryeong insists it is a good fate he returned and that the couple should get married. As the dinner continues, Se-kyung gets a message, and her demeanour changes. She quickly borrows Sister Chae-hwan’s car and lies that she has a work emergency. It seems the message was about So-min.

The Episode Review

It looks like we won’t be getting any information on Yoon-sang’s miraculous return in this episode. So far, we only know he was kidnapped and tortured. We don’t know why and how he escaped. We also don’t know what the red flickering thing in his chest is. How has Se-kyung not noticed this? We get she is busy fighting her own battles, but a flickering thing in the chest of the man you love is something one should notice.

Whatever happened to Yoon-sang, he is not ready to share it. It also explains why he is cool with Se-kyung keeping secrets from him. He understands where she is coming from. Fingers crossed that their secrets don’t tear them apart.

On the other hand, the episode ended with a cliffhanger about what happened to So-min. Will Se-kyung manage to save the little girl in time? Why take So-min to mess with Se-kyung? Is this what the stalker meant about making things fun? If it is, then it is diabolical to involve innocent kids in such situations. Let’s dive into the next episode to see if So-min will live to witness the end of the world!
