Blood & Water is the next high school drama that focuses on an elite school and all the misadventures which somehow always includes blood, betrayal, sex and adults doing evil things. Well, this South African thriller first dropped during the pandemic and had everyone who was glued to their screens hyping it up to get instant renewals before it went into a 2-year hiatus. Thankfully, Blood & Water returns with season 4 in March 2024 and we get most of our favourite characters back.

Following the events of season 3, all the big bad guys like the Molapos and Point of Grace have been replaced by a new baddie in town. Sisters Puleng and Fikile are back but are going to therapy to process the incidents that have turned their lives upside down.

Their friends haven’t come out unscathed either as Sam has PTSD while KB Molapo moves in with Chris. A new boy enters the scene and switches up the dynamic as it becomes a catalyst for the main conflict in Blood & Water Season 4.

An anonymous stalker starts targeting Puleng but it is Fikile who gets all riled up. Chris and KB try to navigate the latter’s rising music career but a dangerous rival comes their way. Wendy and Tahira struggle with school but a rift is created between them when Tahira starts going down an unsavory path. The latest it girl, Asanda sets her eyes on Wade but he cannot see through her charming persona.

Let’s get the elephant out of the room, yes that new guy is Ivan from Elite. We get a fun little cameo from Ivan and it’s more than what Fiks gets with her Elite appearance. He actually has a pretty decent role as Puleng’s love interest. But Blood & Water Season 4 doesn’t erase the past storylines for a new one. It doesn’t let old wounds drag either as we see the group coping after the Molapo trial while gearing up for what the new season will put them through.

The Netflix Original continues with the same sombre tone as the girls go about solving the newest mystery of who is Puleng’s stalker. But we get fun subplots from Chris, KB and Tahira that lighten the mood with their hilarious escapades.

Despite getting 3 seasons worth of stories, there is still space for all the characters to change and grow. Sure, some of the lead characters take a back seat like Sam and KB, however, we get to see a new side of Wade and Tahira. In fact, Fikile gets a pretty risky character arc which paints her in a negative light but it shows that she is human and flawed.

Blood & Water Season 4 sets up the stalker mystery and ties in the rest of the subplots neatly. However, the ending is a little rushed with some hasty conclusions for the sake of finishing up the story in case it isn’t renewed. If there is much to go by this new trend, we need to convince OTTs to create multiple-season shows so that the writers can focus on giving us well-executed stories instead of worrying about when they are going to get the axe.
