Zorro – Season 1 Episode 10 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

What happened to Diego’s wealth?

At the start of the episode, Guadalupe and Samuel arrive at Monasterio’s office, who has been serving as an interim Governor. Diego is also called to the office, and in his presence, Guadalupe presents Monasterio with a fake birth certificate, stating that Samuel is Alejandro’s son, who was born out of wedlock.

Guadalupe continues that Alejandro fled Capistrano after killing her daughter, and now she wants half the inheritance that rightfully belongs to her and Samuel. Monasterio asks them to wait for the judge to arrive from San Francisco. He also assures that he’ll carry out a proper investigation before reaching a conclusion.

All of the documents are in order, and in the lack of Father Lagerra’s testimony (Samuel killed him to cover his tracks), Diego is ordered by the judge to give one-third of his inheritance to Montoro, aka Samuel. This is going to be a problem, as Diego can’t give them his house because of what’s underneath, and also the mine because of the gold Diego’s father has hidden.

Therefore, he offers to give Guadalupe his ranch, his land, and the mine on the condition that they’ll uphold the commitment Diego had made to the natives. Since they didn’t ask for the Scottish man’s mine, Diego figures that Guadalupe and Montoro don’t know about the hidden gold.

What happened to Lucia and the rest of the Bear Clan?

Diego realizes that the only way to snuff out the members of the Bear Clan is by killing Monasterio. Diego arrives at the Monasterio house, Q as Zorro to mock him for his incompetence and inability to catch Zorro. Diego even goes on to say that Monasterio owes Zorro for his title and position.

Monasterio challenges Diego to a duel and kills him with his rapier, rendering Lolita a widow just days after her marriage. However, Lucia’s mother tries to convince Lolita that Diego is not at fault, as the duel was fair. Once Monasterio is dead, Diego receives a message from the Bear Clan and is invited to their secret hideout.

Lucia and others show themselves and hands Diego Alejandro’s mask.  Now, the clan plans to work on the final frontier of their plan: killing Zorro. However, this is all a farce, as Monasterio still lives and has planned the entire thing with Diego.

A battle ensues, and just as Lucia is going to drive her rapier through Diego’s heart, she’s shot by Lolita. However, Lolita asks Diego to never contact her again, blaming him for destroying her family. As for Carmen, she manages to flee on her horse.

What went down in New York?

Diego finds out about Vanderveen from Lucia and decides to pay him a visit to learn more about his father’s mine and the gold hidden inside. Diego also enlists Nah-Lin to aid him in this voyage as the Red Snake. Moreover, he also asks Tchang to help him discreetly in New York.

Once in New York, he sends out an invitation, asking for Vanderveen’s audience. However, Vanderveen has other plans and asks his men to burn down the hotel where Diego and his entourage have been staying. From the looks of it, it appears that Zorro knows about Venderveen’s betrayal and escapes before Vanderveen and his men can make an attempt on his life.

Why does Karina free Lucia?

Karina has been having an affair with Tadeo, and one night, while he’s drunk and vulnerable, Karina strikes and murders Tadeo in cold blood. Tadeo’s maid finds his body the next morning, and it appears that his death will be cited as a suicide, given Tadeo was heartbroken after Lucia was jailed.

Moreover, Karina also has her men help Lucia get free and later join forces for her personal gain. With Lucia’s help, she plans to strengthen her foothold in California.

The Episode Review

If you think Diego’s journey as a masked vigilante has come to an end, you couldn’t be more wrong. As we’re told, Zorro is not a person; he’s an idea, a symbol of courage to rebel against injustice and oppression. As long as these vices remain, Zorro will live, be it in Diego de la Vega or someone else.

Towards the end, we see Diego trying to have a sit-down with Vanderveen, but he’s betrayed when his not-so-gracious host orders his death. So, in the next season, we will see Zorro battling all sorts of dangers and corruption in New York and California.
