Zorro – Season 1 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Episode 6

Episode 6 of Zorro starts off tense and equally tragic. We see Samuel walking inside a saloon, but rather than asking for a pint, he mercilessly slaughters everyone present except the bartender. Samuel didn’t know these men; he just wanted to try out the gun Mr. Vanderveen had gifted him to carry out the job. Mr. Vanderveen is planning to build a railroad in California, linking it up with the rest of America for trade and the like.

After Ramirez’s death, his mine workers are left with no work and with no other way to sustain themselves; they’ve no choice but to starve themselves. Diego decides to put his wealth to good use and offers to buy the mine. The Governor, on the other hand, tells Diego to submit his bid in the auction. However, as soon as Diego leaves, the Governor orders his hired gun to silence Diego or anyone he has shared the news of the auction.

As the episode goes on, Mei returns a letter she found in Diego Jacket’s. The letter was from the clan of the Bear, the secret society behind Senor De la Vega’s death. As per the contents of the letters, the clan of the bear wants to have a sit down with Diego. Diego also learns that a few masked men have tried to burn the printing press and the owner with it. Diego suspects it is because he has shared the news of the auction with him. Diego also realizes that the assassins will try to attack him next.

Diego, under the guise of Zorro, captures the assassin, asking why they’re lurking outside De la Vega’s mansion, and also who’s sent them. After finding himself on the other end of Zorro’s sword, the assassins have no choice but to reveal the truth. In response, Zorro warns them to steer clear of Diego, saying that Diego belongs to him. Meanwhile, Nah-Lin, after learning that the Governor has killed his man unjustly, attacks the prison and wounds Monasterio. Lolita was also there, but thankfully, both she and Monasterio survived.

The Russians aren’t happy to know that the auction has been open to the public, as they were under the impression that the auction would only be exclusive to them. In reality, it was; the Governor tried his best to keep the auction discreet, but the news eventually got out. Diego is rich, but he’ll in no way be able to compete with the Russians, especially when they’re backed by the crown itself.  Thus, Diego strikes a valuable deal with Mr Tchang and asks him to disrupt the auction and make sure Andreyevich doesn’t reach the auction house.

While all of this is taking place, Diego is taken by the Clan of the Bear. We learn that the clan are a group of patriots who want freedom from Mexico. The men of the group reveal that Diego’s father was also a prized member, and even offers Diego to join. Diego accepts may be to find the group’s role in his father’s death. But what about the action? In the nick of time, Bernardo makes it to Ramirez’s ranch and offers ten thousand pesos to purchase the mine.

As the episode nears its end, Diego is invited for supper at the Marquez ranch, but the situation escalates when Nah-Lin takes Monasterio hostage. As she’s about to plunge his axe into his heart, Lolita shoots and incapacitates Nah-Lin. Monasterio and Tadeo put Nah-Lin’s unconscious body in the wagon to take her to Los Angeles.

The Episode Review

So since Zorro ( Nah-Lin, not the original one) is caught, will Lolita marry Monasterio, or will listen to her heart and break off her engagement? From what we see in the final moments of the episode, it’s clear that Lolita will stand by her decision, and will marry Monasterio. Toward the end, she also asks Monasterio to set up a wedding date now that Zorro is captured. However, we still can’t deny that no matter what Lolita says, he still has feelings for Diego!
