What did Alex Murdaugh do?

Alex Murdaugh is an American murderer who killed his wife, Maggie, and their son, Paul, in South Carolina on the 7th of June 2021. Murdaugh was a former lawyer from a prominent family of attorneys in the area, and his son, Paul, was under indictment at the time of his death for driving a boat into a bridge while drunk, resulting in the death of Mallory Beach.

The case became the subject of a Netflix true crime series called Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal released in 2023, and it ran for 2 seasons. It detailed all the events, starting with the boat accident and ending with the shocking murder of Maggie and Paul.

What happened during the trial?

The trial took place in the Fourteenth Circuit of the South Carolina Circuit Court, beginning on the 25th of January 2023. Murdaugh pleaded not guilty to murder. The local media dubbed it the “trial of the century,” and it was thought to be one of the most high-profile cases in South Carolina’s legal history.

The verdict was transmitted live across the United States on major broadcast and cable news networks due to the high-profile nature of the case. A motion for a mistrial from the defence was denied by the judge presiding over the case, as the evidence of guilt was overwhelming.

Murdaugh was sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole on the 3rd of March 2023. After his sentencing, Murdaugh was taken to the Kirkland Correctional Institution in northwestern Columbia, South Carolina for an evaluation to determine which maximum security prison he would serve his sentence at.
