Where is Mallory?
Murders at Moselle
No Secrets Are Safe
First, a young man is “hit by a car,” then a housekeeper “trips and falls” on some stairs, a young woman dies in a boating accident, and then the wife and son of prestigious attorney Alex Murdaugh are shot dead.
The Murdaugh trial is still ongoing, and 4 out of 5 of these Murdaugh family-related deaths are still unaccounted for. This documentary sets out to give voices to families of the deceased and to help ensure that justice is served.
Netflix is on the spot with this one. Efficiently putting out the documentary while many Americans are getting daily updates about the trial of Alex Murdaugh is a smart move. The series features interviews with the friends, boyfriend, and parents of Mallory Beach, the young woman killed in a boat accident with Pual Murdaugh as the driver, as well as a few other people related to the deaths.
Morgan Doughty, former girlfriend of Paul Murdaugh gets the most screen time, and its simple to understand why; she was the only person they could interview that had the most insight into the Murdaughs’ lives. It certainly would have been nice if they were able to cover a little more ground and include more interviews with former Murdaugh employees, for example, but this documentary is about a very influential family that appears to be involved in a lot of cover-ups, so finding more key people to interview would be hard to achieve as speaking out could put a target on their backs.
Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal really has some great coverage of the story and tells the victims’ stories in a gripping way. It is easy to see why there is so much interest in the Murdaugh family; the events surrounding them sound unbelievable, like they came out of a southern mystery-thriller novel, yet they are very much real.
Again, the best thing about this documentary is that they released it while information is still being uncovered about these incidents, so the suspense is really heightened.
Netflix is doing a great job with its true crime documentaries and this one is no exception. The story displays the facts related to the case, exposing the obvious corruption within law enforcement and other agencies in the Hampton area. Although justice has yet to be served, there is some satisfaction in the fact that many people care about seeing the end of these mysterious murders, as evidenced by the documentary’s existence.
