What happened to Brittanee Drexel?
Brittanee Drexel was a 17-year-old who went missing on the evening of the 25th of April, 2009. The case was recently featured in season 1 of Crime Nation. She left a hotel in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she had been staying with friends during spring break. Drexel walked to another hotel which was a short distance away, and she texted her boyfriend to say that she was heading back to her hotel. This was the last time she was known to be alive.
Police investigated Drexel’s disappearance but no significant developments were made available to the public until 2016, when it was revealed that a prison inmate had told them she had been abducted and killed by a man called Raymond Moody. The accused man denied any knowledge of the alleged crime. However, the FBI treated the case as a homicide, and the cold case investigation continued.
What happened during the investigation?
Six years passed by without an arrest being made due to a lack of concrete evidence. However, in May 2022, police arrested Raymond Moody, who was a registered sex offender in the area, on charges of murder, kidnapping, and first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He pleaded guilty to all charges in October of that year, and Drexel’s skeletal remains were recovered a week later in a wooded area in Georgetown, about 33 miles from where she originally went missing. Moody had led them to the body after confessing to the horrific crime.
Where is Raymond Moody now?
Raymond Moody was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, and he was also sentenced to two consecutive 30-year sentences for the charges of criminal sexual assault and kidnapping in 2022.
Mood is in his mid-sixties now, and he was serving his sentence at South Carolina’s McCormick Correctional Institution, which is the same prison where Alex Murdaugh is incarcerated, before being moved to Lieber Correctional Institution.
