The Ancient Magus’ Bride – Season 2 Episode 7 Recap & Review

Slow and sure. I

Episode 7 of The Ancient Magus Bride Season 2 begins with Chise and her friends rock climbing during P.E. class. Meanwhile, Adolf asks Elias if he’s okay since he’s always monitoring Chise when he doesn’t have classes. Elias confirms he is upset that Chise doesn’t express the same emotions when they’re together. Elias notices Adolf’s been upset.

Adolf discusses his hometown Dresden with Elias. He says Elias should consider hearing advice from other folks. Elias says he’d only like to listen to Chise, but he’ll keep Adolf’s suggestion in mind. Veronica asks Philomela about her current friendship with Chise. Philomela’s unsure about it, so Veronica says she should get to know her. After tucking some people into their beds, Philomela heads to her room and spots a malicious crow with a letter at night.

Veronica wakes up and notices Philomela left a note for her to read. She went home to handle business and apologized she can’t commit to the morning routine. Philomela arrives and overhears people eavesdropping on her. Philomela asks her familiar Alcyone why someone caught onto her when she was concealed. Alcyone says they should’ve been able to mask their scent, so Philomela believes Chise caught onto her because of Ruth. Alcyone says Chise’s mage background may have allowed her to pick up on Philomela’s scent. She promises to look into it and find a way to bypass Chise’s ability to locate her.

Philomela meets Grandmother. Grandmother asks if Veronica is doing well and confirms they didn’t intend to send Philomela there. They only allowed her to attend Veronica’s charity. Grandmother hits Philomela for disobeying her and orders her to sit on the couch. Meanwhile, the College’s P.E. teacher finds Alice training with her pistol. He acknowledges her good behavior in attending classes and using her dorm room. Alice says she stepped up her game because she wants to impress someone. The P.E. teacher promises to pay for her tools to let her train more. Adolf confronts Renfred.

Renfred admits he wants Alice to stay a child and doesn’t want her to go down the path of himself or his father. Adolf tells Renfred that he should let Alice grow up since she’s shown she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make herself useful to him. Chise and her friends participate in a Bushcrafting exercise. This class helps students learn skills they’ll need to live in nature. The students head to Scotland and prepare for camp. The episode closes with something spying on Chise and Lucy as they head into the forest to look for some wood.

The Episode Review

This chapter of The Ancient Magus Bride Season 2 presents viewers with more insight into Philomela’s life while giving them updates concerning Renfred and Alice’s relationship. Viewers can possibly thank Grandmother for instilling this fear in Philomela’s heart. As we saw during the episode’s start, Philomela wasn’t always this brittle and distant with people.

She came off as a helpful extrovert who assisted people like Rian when they were in trouble. As she’s walking through Grandmother’s residence, you can tell that no one there cares highly for her as much as her familiar Alcyone. Fortunately, Chise might be the one who can assist in getting Philomela back to being the cheerful girl she used to be.

As for Alice, it’s fantastic seeing her take her studies more seriously. After the confrontation she had with Renfred, it made sense for her to double down on her training and school-related activities. Although she’ll need to work harder to win over Renfred, viewers will be pleased to see her take the steps necessary to accomplish her goal of being Renfred’s number-one protector.

Overall, this was a nice set-up episode of The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2. It gives viewers an idea of what Philomela’s life is like behind the scenes and has our characters participating in some whole extracurricular activities. Based on this chapter’s cliffhanger, it seems not all will be well for our students in Scotland. Hopefully, Chise and the others will be on their guard as they spend time together outdoors.
