The Ancient Magus’ Bride – Season 2 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Better bend than break

Episode 6 of The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 starts with Elias asking Renfred if he ever considered someone as his spouse because he’s looking for examples. Elias asks Renfred questions about Alice, and Renfred thinks of Alice as his daughter and plans to protect her until she’s grown enough to make her own decisions. Alice overhears their conversation.

Later, Chise’s priest friend Simon drives Alice and Chise to Elias’s quarters. Elias asks Alice why she’s here, and Alice says she’s borrowing Chise for the night. Chise calms Elias down by telling him she’ll sleep in his room tomorrow. In bed, Alice vents her frustrations for not being useful to Renfred to Chise.

In a flashback, we see Joseph arrive at Renfred and Alice’s home. Joseph’s grasshopper creature slices one of Renfred’s arms, provoking Alice to attack Joseph, however, the grasshopper attacks and harms Alice.

Joseph harms Renfred further as he tries to recover his wounds. Alice tells Chise that she overheard Renfred call Alice his daughter. Although she’s not against being like a daughter to him, Alice admits it was painful to hear because she doesn’t think Renfred is like a father to her. Alice asks Chise about her relationship with Elias, but she doesn’t know what to think. After more chatter, the two head to sleep.

Chise leaves her room from the window during the night and spots Elias on the roof. Chise asks Elias if he could answer her question about making Chise his bride. Elias says it was a convenient solution that would force Chise to be with him. Elias admits apprentices often leave their masters and that Chise helped him learn more things about life.

Elias asks Chise to reconfirm if couples stick together forever, but Chise admits marriage isn’t permanent since couples often resort to divorce. Chise shares her stance on married couples and master/apprentice relationships, and relates them to roles.

Chise says people can choose to follow those roles or not, and she appreciates her time with Elias and is happy to hear that he can’t let her go. Elias asks Chise what “happiness” means, and they end the night with an intimate hug.

At the College, Alice is upset she didn’t accomplish much from her time with Chise. She confronts Renfred about his views toward her, but Renfred says he forced Alice to take the path she had chosen. He feels if he didn’t lead her down this path, she could’ve chosen a normal one.

Alice asks Renfred to let her be her protector instead of being the one who needs protection. Renfred leaves with the thought of Alice still being a child.

In the meantime, we see two people enter a secret area and look through filing cabinets. The episode closes with something malicious glowing from one of the cabinets.

The Episode Review

This was a thought-provoking and semi-emotional chapter of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It delves into the concept of what it means to love someone by examining two relationships. One being between Chise and Elias, and the other being Renfred and Alice. It’s unfortunate that Renfred didn’t take Alice’s words to heart, but over time, many can anticipate Renfred warming up to Alice’s offer.

Chise and Elias’s connection continues to be the highlight of this series. Despite all they’ve been through, neither character wants to leave the other behind. This is sure to resonate with folks who have a lover or friend of their own that they don’t want to forget or abandon. This chapter also presents viewers with another cliffhanger involving that secret door in the College.

I’m unsure what the people obtained from the file cabinet. Based on the malicious purple glow emanating from one of them, it can’t be anything good. Hopefully, our cast will be able to put a stop to whoever is plotting this evil endeavor behind the scenes.

Overall, this was a meaningful episode of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. It gave us some humor amongst its cast while sharing some intriguing insight into relationships and the roles people take within them. I can’t wait to see what other fascinating topics this season plans to tackle next.
