Survival of the Thickest – Season 1 Episode 8 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

For a Bigger Purpose, Bitch

In episode 8 of Survival of the Thickest, we pick up where we previously left off, with Jacque visiting Mavis. He explains that he would like to marry her because he knows that they only have a limited amount of time together. She says yes and ends up accepting his proposal.

Why does Mavis end things with Jacque?

At CC Bloom’s, Mavis and Peppermint intend to host their very own prom night. This prom won’t have a gender-specific dress code, according to the organizers. As Natasha comes back and makes peace with Mavis, matters start to fall into place professionally. Mavis’ personal life, however, is left unresolved as Luca continues to consume her thoughts. She still pictures him whenever she gets intimate with Jacque.

While Luca rings Mavis, Jacque catches their exchange, and she feels uncomfortable when she learns that he knows of Luca. She comes to the realization that repairing her bond with Jacque will not change her outlook towards what she really wants out of life whilst deciding whether or not to fix or upgrade an item at a shop.

Jacque is confronted about it by Mavis, who tells him the fact that the two of them aren’t meant to be together. Evidently hurt, he decides to leave.

Does Survival of the Thickest have a happy ending?

Mavis resumes her work as a drag queen stylist and hosts a prom celebration in the drag club. Additionally, she gets close to Natasha, who believes in her and is by her side. She thinks that a final cherry on the cake needs to be added after realizing that every aspect, besides one, is coming together.

When Mavis contacts Luca, he is at first upset with her choice to wed Jacque. She emphasizes that the sole thing that matters to her at this point is Luca’s comprehension of her circumstance. She admits her genuine affection for him and her fervent desire to have a relationship with him.

Understanding her viewpoint, Luca requests some time to consider everything. After using the tickets he had earlier sent her, Mavis appears to be standing in front of Luca’s front door when he opens it. During the final moments of episode 8, both of them share a kiss and the Netflix show comes to a close.

The Episode Review

The primary focus of episode 8 is Mavis accepting Jacque’s proposal, changing her mind, breaking up with him, and then reuniting with Luca all in the same episode. Mavis seems to be in the prime of her professional life, working with Natasha and growing her own company the way she wanted.

This episode is a perfect representation of how hurried the Netflix show’s overall plot is. Additionally, it’s also challenging to empathize with any of the characters, except for Jacque, because the characters, especially Mavis, are incredibly selfish and narcissistic.

Mavis accepts Jacque’s proposal because it aligned with her plans. She even tells her friends that she loves him and wishes to start a family with him. Then, all of a sudden, a phone call from Luca changes her mind, and she throws her relationship with Jacque out the window. A character like Mavis is difficult to relate to or empathize with because she manipulates people to her advantage.

Having a morally ambiguous character adds a lot of depth to a show, which is usually an excellent addition. However, presenting a morally unreliable character as a model of virtue is unreasonable and repulsive.
