School Spirits – Season 1 Episode 2 “The Fault in Our Scars” Recap & Review

The Fault In Our Scars

Episode 2 of School Spirits starts with Simon hearing and seeing Maddie. Charley is shocked to see this and everyone has questions they want to ask. Maddie tells Simon that she doesn’t have answers as she doesn’t remember.

Simon explains that he thinks Xavier had something to do with whatever happened, while Maddie informs him about Xavier cheating on her with Claire. Unfortunately, Nicole interrupts their conversation and calls Simon to join the search party.

Maddie tries to get answers from Charley about her ability to talk to Simon but he is also clueless. She leaves to join her search party but ends up in the boiler room. Charley asks her to keep her ability to speak to the living between them.

Elsewhere, Xavier is ordered by his dad to stay indoors until they find out what happened to Maddie. He doesn’t want Xavier going back to school and having to deal with being a suspect until he is cleared. Xavier is frustrated as people are already trolling him on the internet.  Claire keeps texting him but he ignores her messages.

Back at school, Maddie asks if any of the other ghosts have ever spoken to the living. None of them has managed to and Mr Martin thinks that Maddie may be struggling so he asks her to write her obituary. Maddie later tells him that she is not going to write the obituary. She is not ready to say goodbye to her old life. She is worried about her mom and how she is coping with her death. Mr Martin assures her that it will get easier but Maddie is not convinced.

Meanwhile, a casual talk with the janitor makes Simon question if they are looking at the right place.

The next morning, Maddie and Rhonda listen in on the teacher’s conversation. Rhonda is certain that everyone will soon forget about Maddie but Maddie insists Simon won’t let them. Through the eavesdropping, Maddie learns that the blood in the boiler room has been confirmed to be hers.

In the meantime, Xavier stays home watching Spongebob and trying to pass time. Claire skips school and visits him. She asks him why he has been ignoring her texts and he says he can’t look at his phone. She offers to be there for him and tells Xavier that he can’t talk to anyone other than her. Xavier admits that he’s scared and promises that they will find Maddie’s body.

Later, his dad drops by and asks Xavier if he swapped Maddie’s phone. The police were unable to get anything from the phone and are sure there is more to the story. Xavier’s father doesn’t know what to believe and tells Xavier to pray nothing else comes out, pointing to him as a suspect. Xavier gets angry and starts punching the wall.

At school, Simon tries to understand how he talked to Maddie’s ghost. Nicole is still hoping that Maddie will soon return. She is also grossed out by the new grief teacher who keeps staring at her. As they discuss, Simon sees Maddie’s ghost again and she calls him over. Maddie asks for his help in solving her murder. She thinks she was killed by someone she trusted.

He asks her what she remembers and Maddie says she remembers leaving homeroom to look for her mom after she showed up. Simon informs her that according to the statement her mom gave the police, they never met. That means that something happened to her after she left the homeroom.

Simon asks her how she got out of the boiler room. She remembers waking up with a head injury and seeing blood on the wall. She then got out and walked along the hallway but no one could hear or see her. Simon is not sure if Xavier got help from Clair to get rid of Maddie. He remembers that Xavier was not in the eighth period.

Simon starts investigating Xavier and checks the lockers at school. However, he doesn’t find much in Xavier’s locker.

On the other hand, Charley asks Maddie how she is progressing and if she can still talk to Simon. He believes that Simon may be seeing her because he is grieving for her. They watch the janitor clean off her blood from the boiler room wall and Maddie visits Simon in class.

Simon asks to leave the class to relieve himself. The teacher finds his behaviour strange but assumes he is grieving. Maddie tells Simon that the cops found her phone clean and are certain that her phone was swapped. Maddie takes him to the place around the school where she used to hang with Xavier.

As they search the area, Simon asks what Maddie sees in Xavier. Maddie shrugs and admits she found Xavier hot and he was not messed up back then. She remembers Xavier killing a mouse and contemplates if that was a stepping stone to killing her.

Simon finds a piece of what looks like Maddie’s phone and believes that someone intentionally destroyed it. Telling Maddie this, she convinces him to give the piece to Mr Anderson. However, Mr Anderson quizzes where he found the piece.

A few moments later, Simon notices police dogs sniffing around the school. One of the dogs sniffs something in Mr Anderson’s class and he explains that it is just Maddie’s paper.

Later, Maddie joins the other ghosts as they relax in the swimming pool. Charley sees his old classmate who is now a dad to a student. Back in the day, Charley had a crush on him. As they tease each other, they witness Claire saving a fellow student from drowning. Maddie starts having conflicted feelings about her theory that Claire helped Xavier kill her.

Away from school, Xavier visits Maddie’s mom and explains that he hurt Maddie but not physically. He feels guilty for cheating on Maddie. Maddie’s mom also expresses her guilt for not being a good mom.

At school, Simon tells Maddie that the Sherriff may be protecting Xavier as he is his son. He is not happy that Maddie believes Claire is innocent and asks her to give him a chance to prove Xavier is guilty. He meets with Maddie later at the place he found the phone pieces and is shocked to find Mr Anderson there too.

In the gym, Mr Martin asks Charley if he knows if Maddie made contact with the living but Charley insists it is impossible. Charley is hoping he can also make contact with his old crush but is unable to.

The Episode Review

Mr Anderson is becoming suspicious now and he definitely looks like he is hiding something. Why is he against Simon investigating the case and what was he doing in that area?

The grief teacher is suspicious too, why does she keep staring at Nicole? And speaking of teachers, Mr Martin is a tad too nosy, what are his motives?

I am beginning to think that Xavier is innocent but you can never really tell with psychopaths. He might have gone to visit Maddie’s mom to fish for information.

However, we all deserve a friend like Simon. He has been doing his best to help Maddie but I don’t think it has truly dawned on him that Maddie is gone.
