Has Under the Banner of Heaven been renewed for Season 2? Here’s What We Know:

Renewed Or Cancelled?

Under the Banner of Heaven is a striking crime drama from FX and Hulu, based on the true crime bestseller from John Krakauer.

If you found the story of murder in a Mormon town chilling, you may be wondering if Dustin Lance Black’s series is getting renewed for another season.

What is Under the Banner of Heaven about?

Under the Banner of Heaven is a 7-episode crime drama set in a Utah town heavily influenced by the LDS Church.

Based on a true story, the Hulu/FX series follows Detectives Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) and Bill Taba (Gil Birmingham) as they seek to uncover the mystery of who murdered the young Mormon woman, Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones). When the detectives find that the crime has ties to Mormon fundamentalism, they realize the danger isn’t yet over. More blood may yet be shed.

We have coverage for Under the Banner of Heaven across the site, including episode recaps. Feel free to check that out!

Has Under the Banner of Heaven been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Under the Banner of Heaven has not been renewed for a second season.

The season finale gave us a conclusive end to the series, as the mystery of Brenda Lafferty’s murder was solved and the perpetrators arrested.

There’s not much potential for a second season to pick up with the same storyline. If the show were to be renewed, however, it could potentially follow a different crime. And it could continue to explore Jeb’s struggle with his faith and family. Given that the series is based on a book and was only billed for seven episodes, we still predict that Under the Banner of Heaven will not be renewed for a second season.

We’ll be sure to update this section with accurate details over the coming weeks and months when we know more!

What we know about season 2 so far:

Hulu and FX have not green-lit a sequel to Under the Banner of Heaven, so nothing is known about season 2.

However, if Hulu were to renew Under the Banner of Heaven, the shifting dynamics of Jeb Pyre’s family would be interesting to explore–especially if Rebecca were to be given a more critical role in the series.

We’ll be sure to update this page in the future when more information is known!

  1. Yes please! More episodes. This is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. Very sad, however very interesting and entertaining. I would definitely watch more. Please and thank you to the wonderful actors.

  2. One season is never enough for any series. There’s always more to do for a second season to be made. I just feel like once season just get you going and when it ends so quickly you want more at least I do. So let’s do it season two please!

  3. I’m sure this stirred up the most terrible memories for the folks involved. For that I feel terrible and wish them peace.
    However …..
The acting was incredible and I’d love to see more

  4. This not only needs a Second Season it deserves it. This really was a superb production from a really harrowing sure story, it’s certainly got me hooked.

  5. Definitely needs a second season, although the ‘crime’ is somewhat solved, there are many loose ends… The other brothers, Prophet Onias who was also complicit to a point, the church who tried to cover up, Jeb’s own faith struggle and the dynamic with his own daughters and wife, and maybe there’s more to the original story i.e. Sam and his wife who left Dianna and Matilda as y the gas station… what happened. Surely there is at least another 7 episodes, unveiling more of the LDS which in its own right is compelling.

  6. This was one of the best series I’ve ever watched! I have every streaming station and nothing has compared to this. The acting and cinematography was excellent. Of course there should be a second season. I was left with too many questions. Will Jen want his girls to live under this suppression of women, even his own wife. Too many questions to be answered yet. Please consider your viewers.

  7. This series does seem unfinished and should have a second season that unites or diminishes these broken families and their faith. Season 2 should show how our justice system dealt with or oversaw these crimes.

  8. Would love to see a second season with the same two dynamic leading actors; there’s still more story…

  9. Great show good acting story line yes continuing the show would be great being that it’s based on a true story I’m rewatching the last episode to see who cut the babies head off .

  10. Superb acting, cinematography, and fantastic storytelling. One of the best series in a long time that was visually elegant. I would love to see the story continue. The Native American storyline was just as compelling as the main theme. I want to know more about Taba’s background. The two partners are a great mastering of the two cultures working together. I love the storyline about the aging parent and her moments of distinct clarity. Does Jeb really want his girls to grow up as second class citizens? Would the marriage survive the doubt of Faith? There’s a richness of material there for another season juxtaposed against the beautiful landscape.

  11. Perhaps the best episodic – at least compared to others in the “crime, detective/law & order vs morality” genre ever made. Brilliant in all categories: writing/directing/cinematography -and perhaps the crown jewel in Ron Howard’s already stellar producer CV. BRAVO!!!!

  12. Thought there would be at least a second part in this series. I found myself wishing the week would go by faster so I could find out what happened next. I learned a lot about the Mormon faith. I had no idea this was such a strict religion. I found the lead actors did an incredible job. Please consider adding at least one more season.

  13. Definitely needs a second season. Thought the series was great and acting very good!
