Has The Midwich Cuckoos been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed Or Cancelled?

The Midwich Cuckoos is a sci-fi fantasy series, with sprinklings of drama for good measure. This 7 episode series has been an intriguing mystery and given how heavily Sky have been advertising this, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled.

What is The Midwich Cuckoos Season 1 about?

The Midwich Cuckoos is the latest remake, this time coming straight out of Sky Studios. Set in the small fictional village of Midwich, the residents find their lives turned upside down by an alien presence. After a blackout, all the women inexplicably become pregnant and give birth simultaneously. When the kids are born, it soon becomes clear that something is very wrong indeed.

Inspired by the 1957 novel of the same name, this is an eerie, atmospheric series that manages to grip you from start to finish.

We have extensive coverage of The Midwich Cuckoos on the site, including ongoing recaps for all seven episodes. You can find those HERE!

Has Midwich Cuckoos been renewed for season 2?

At the time of writing, Sky has not renewed Midwich Cuckoos for season 2. Given the way this ends though, it’ll be interesting to see if they actually do renew this for a follow-up.

For those who need a reminder, the final episode ended with the main conflict resolved but plenty still on the table, teasing a potential follow-up with a change in direction and, possible, another time jump.

Weighing all of this up, there’s a pretty good amount of evidence supporting The Midwich Cuckoos being renewed for season 2.

However, creator David Farr has shot down this idea, admitting that he never intended for this to have a second season.

“It completely finishes,” David says, “and that’s really important to all of us. We wanted to do a complete story, that’s it’s thing.

Because it’s a conceptual idea, if Sky get very enthusiastic, then there is a possibility of it expanding and becoming something slightly different, I would say. But it’s not a kind of classic repeatable. It’s definitely not that. It was never intended to be.”

However, Sky may decide to bring in a different showrunner or take the show in a different direction should this do well with audiences.

What we know about season 2 so far:

Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point, given Sky have not green-lit a sequel.

However, there is always the possibility that the actors return for a follow-up or even a spin-off. The ending certainly leaves a lot on the table, and although the kids are stopped at the end, Westcott was not.

There’s also the hint that these times can just come back again, so we could see another village affected by the blackout, or this occurrence could spread out to a change in country altogether! After all, if the first occurrence began in Russia, why not somewhere like Spain, South Africa or even India?

Weighing all of this up, we’re under the impression that there will not be a season 2 but we will aim to update this page when more information becomes available.

  1. Love season 1. Would absolutely love to see what season 2 holds. Hope they reconsider.

  2. Talking about season 2? They won’t even make season 1 available in the USA. Why are they dragging their feet on this, when they push every other police procedural our way?

  3. Well, Season 1 was a fairly faithful rendition of the original story written by John Wyndham back in the 1950s. The children were all killed off at the end of the book and in the 1960 movie ‘Village of the Damned’. One thing that disappointed me in this series was that little if any use was made of the ‘fact’ that the children’s eyes were supposed to turn a bright golden colour when they used their powers. Another thing that disappointed me was that in the original book, Wyndham has an egg-shaped object seen in the centre of the village while everyone was first put to sleep, so we have a plausible manifestation of alien activity, whereas in this series no explanation for how the event happened is ever given.

I suppose that one could have a second season if that character in the blue suit who was a survivor of that Russian village colony of children and was still alive at the end of this series could somehow bring them back to life or find another village of children,
