Has Black Cake been renewed for Season 2? Here’s what we know:

Renewed or Cancelled?

Black Cake premiered in November 2023 on Hulu. The eight-episode Season 1 unfolded in the subsequent weeks and concluded on 6th December. The show is based on Charmaine Wilkerson’s novel of the same name. Adrienne Warren, Ashley Thomas, Mia Isaac, and Jade Eshete comprise the core cast in Season 1.

Black Cake got a great response from fans and critics. It is an authentic rendition of the source material. Creator Marissa Jo Cerar has kept the literary sensibilities intact and moulded them into a moving narrative.

If you’ve finished watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is Black Cake Season 1 about?

Hulu’s Black Cake operates in two timelines. The story revolves around Eleanor Bennett’s explosive audio recordings. Eleanor contracts a fatal brain tumour and leaves her kids, Byron and Benny, with these tapes to explain her true story. The siblings, who start off estranged, come together to listen to their mother’s story. Charles Mitch, a lawyer friend of hers and her husband Gibbs is also involved in the process.

It is revealed that Eleanor’s real name is Coventina. She grew up in the Caribbean and relinquished her promising career as a swimmer to become a runaway bride after her father, Lin, “gave her away” to a local goon. Covey’s story unravels at each juncture to reveal how much she overcame to give a decent life to her children and family. Everything changed when Covey met Gibbs in London after running away from home.

As the series progresses, we learn these secrets – or realities – about our characters that challenge us to form an opinion on them. We have covered the entire show with detailed episodic recaps, which might prove to be helpful for viewers yet to watch the show.

Has Black Cake been renewed for Season 2?

Black Cake has yet to be been renewed or cancelled by Hulu. Given the reception of the first season, it is highly possible that we might get an announcement soon.

Generally, Hulu, like other streamers, gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Only Murders in the Building, Dark Winds etc.) Other times, it can take months before streamers decide a show’s future.

The show has been praised for the clever handling of its complex subject matter. Because there is a lot of story to tell and a lot of characters to develop, it was a tectonic task for the creators. But they have done the execution admirably. We had not heard anything from the creators or the cast about any renewal plans…until a week ago when Jo Carer broke her silence.

Speaking on a live stream, Jo Carer hinted toward the possibility of another season. She has enough ammunition to explore more of Wilkerson’s novel. Excerpts from her comments are reproduced below:

“Well, I just didn’t know how you would tell all of these stories in two to two and a half hours or three hours, depending on how long movies are… I wanted to tell every character’s story. I always say that Season 1 is act one of Benny, Byron, and Mabel’s stories, and Bunny’s too. It would be great if there were a second season. I haven’t heard anything yet, but that would be really cool to see what happens with the kids in the future and all that kind of stuff.”

We are optimistic about the renewal decision. Owing to the response from the viewers and critics, we do not think that Hulu will cancel the series. Due to the recent budgetary cuts across the board, many shows aren’t getting a green light. But Black Cake merits a renewal. This page will be updated as and when new details become available!

What do we know about Season 2 so far:

Not much is known about season 2 at the time of writing, given that Hulu has not renewed the show. It will be fair to assume that the new season – if it happens – will pick up from a new tangent of the same story.

Black Cake ends on a cliffhanger as Mathilda wonders the identity of her biological father. Eleanor indicated that her boss in Scotland, who violated her, was not Mathilda’s father. This explosive revelation might mean that she had another affair with someone else before she met Gibbs. There is no mention of it in the recording, beckoning the question of why she would hide it.

Most of the cast members should return for the next season. But it all depends on the needs and requirements of the story. We’ll be sure to update this section with more information as it becomes available.

  2. Looking forward to a Season 2, 3, and more. I knew Black Cake was a hit when my sister, who does like anything movie that is shown on the Hallmark channel, called to let me know she had watched the first episode. We discussed it and I encouraged her watch episode 2. Was not sure she would because for her it was too emotional. But a few days passed when I heard from her with the news that she had watched episodes 2 – 6.We had a great conversation about Black Cake. I was so proud of my baby sister. But after episode 8 the only question was…when will season 2 be coming out.
So on behalf of my baby-sister, ton my family & friends (who I talked into watching), we all agreed there should be several more seasons of Black Cake. And if needed we have a few thoughts on directions to explore.
