The Swarm, or Der Schwarm, took the mantle of being the costliest show ever made as a German co-production when it first aired in March this year. The sci-fi show is based on Frank Schatzing’s novel of the same name. It revolves around the emergence of a million-year-old intelligence lurking deep in the ocean that strategically attacks humanity for years of unabated crimes on marine life. 

More than anything, The Swarm feels relevant and important in the context of the discussion around sustenance and preservation. It falls short of being square ecological warfare but it does offer a lot of intrigue with a well-sculpted narrative. 

If you’ve finished watching this one, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or cancelled. Here’s what we know so far:

What is The Swarm Season 1 about?

Strange events in the ocean in several parts of the world get scientists curious. The Swarm takes place in different countries through different characters, all of whom encounter such occasions. Instances that the academics find alarming include the emergence of a new, invasive species of ice worms that wreak havoc along the coastlines. This later induces destructive tsunamis that claim the lives of many.

Jellyfish and crabs flood places like Venice and Cape Town to the extent that they cover entire beaches and neighbourhoods. In France, infected lobsters and other sea animals threaten to spread a virus amongst the population, the likes of which have never been toxic to humans before. 

Finally, around the Vancouver region in the ocean, humpback whales connive with orcas to overturn boats full of tourists looking to enjoy a show and kill them…all of this at the behest of an intelligence that has hidden in the depths of the oceans since time immemorial.

Has The Swarm been renewed for Season 2?

At the time of writing, ZDF has not renewed The Swarm for a second season. Given the nature of this series, that could change if there is some positivity from the viewers and encouragement from the creators and the audience. 

Generally, ZDF and CW, like other cable networks and streamers, gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton etc.) Other times, it can take months before streamers decide a show’s future.

Season 1 of The Swarm has received a mixed response from critics, although audiences around the world tuned in weekly in strong numbers to watch the show. The Swarm became one of the most-watched shows on ZDF (Germany) and ORF (Austria) during its initial release. The response from other European geographies was also very positive. The Nielsen ratings from CW are not as encouraging but still quite steady. 

Given how the first season has ended, a follow-up should be expected. But everything is a question mark right now as we do not have confirmation of a renewal or a cancellation.  

We predict that The Swarm will be renewed for a second season. There is still a lot in Schatzing’s novel left to be told and the first season also ends on a cliffhanger with few answers.

What do we know about Season 2 so far: 

Not much is known about season 2 at the time of writing, given ZDF has not officially renewed this one yet. Should the streamers decide to greenlight a third season, it’s fair to assume that we will pick up in the aftermath of Charlie washing ashore, miraculously alive and carrying the Yrr’s DNA.    

The very last moment of Season 1 hints at the possibility that humans can co-exist with the Yrr and might have the opportunity to strike a truce with them. The fate of the Thorvaldsson and the world at large remained unknown as Season 1 stopped short of giving us closure. 

ZDF will likely make an official announcement several months from now, once the final viewing figures are in. Fans will be eagerly watching for any new announcements from the German network, which we anticipate should come in 2024. We’ll be sure to update this section with more information as it becomes available.

  1. Got to be a series 2 really enjoyed the first season, It left us at a cliff hanger so cant wait for a second season.

  2. I thought the show was outstanding. At the end of each episode I was on edge waiting for the next one. Season 1 did end with a cliffhanger. A great Sci-Fi series or is it. So much of this world that we do not know.
    Anxiously waiting for Season 2 to start.

  19. Just learned about this series and glad I did. Through episode 6 and staying up late to get through 7 and 8. It was a difficult series to find after I read about it, only available on CW app. If it would have been on a stronger streaming network like Netflix, Prime or Paramount, I would have found it sooner. If numbers arent so strong in America, its possible that the ad campaign wasnt string enough. Really hope Season 2 is produced, as its one of the best series I’ve watched in a very long time.

  23. I watched this series twice and was on the edge of seat of the time. I agreed with all the comments above it is worth a second season. We have injured our planet to the brink of destruction.

  29. Extremely entertaining series from episode 1 till its season 1 finally. Nature(In this case the ocean) is fed up with the way mankind has treated it for hundreds of years and it is not going to allow this behavior to continue. It is given us a taste of what we can expect if we do not change our behavior. We as a civilization have wreaked havoc on nature and they are saying no more and we would be smart to heed the warning signs. I hope we will get educated even more with a second season of this powerfully informative series.
