Pluto is the latest Netflix anime, blending sci-fi elements with a dash of drama and well-worked action. After finishing all 8 episodes, you may be wondering if this has been renewed or canceled. Here’s what we know:
What is Pluto Season 1 about?
Pluto is an anime series based on a manga written by Naoki Urasawa. The story serves as a dark portrayal of Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy, preferably “The Greatest Robot On Earth’s” story arc. It revolves around the demise of a famed Swiss robot Montblanc, worshipped for his dedication to nature conservation and beautiful attitude toward others.
A Europol detective named Gesicht investigates Montblanc’s death and discovers evidence concerning an entity called Pluto. Not only that but he learns of a heinous plot involving eight robots who participated in a previous war. While wrestling with his internal issues, Gesicht must find a way to maintain peace between robots and humankind.

Has Pluto been renewed for season 2?
At the time of writing, Pluto has not been renewed for a second season. Given the nature of the show’s content, it makes a lot of sense for it not to receive another season.
Generally, Netflix gauges numerous metrics before renewing a show, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some shows, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton & Irregulars). Other times, it can take months before Netflix decides a show’s future.
So far, Pluto has received immense praise from audiences and critics alike, with plenty of anime action and beautiful animation. Fans seem to be resonating with this one but of course, it all comes down to that drop-off rate.
Considering this adaptation covered all the manga’s content, it’s likely Pluto will not be renewed for a second season. However, there’s always a chance for Netflix to signal out the same studio to do a reimagining of the original Astro Boy or to adapt one of Naoki Urasawa’s other manga like the well-beloved 20th Century Boys.

What we know about season 2 so far:
Barely anything is known about season 2 at this point, given Netflix has not green-lit a sequel. As mentioned above, Studio M-2 adapted the manga in its entirety within the eight episodes. Therefore, it’s best to expect Pluto to remain a single-season show from this point forward.
However, there’s always a chance Netflix will team up with the same studio or another one to create adaptations for works under Tezuka’s or Urasawa’s catalog. Whether they want to remake the original Astro Boy or adapt Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys, Billy Bat, etc. is up to them to decide.
