One Piece (Anime) – Episode 1091 Recap & Review

One Piece

Episode 1091

Franky demonstrates his appreciation for Vegapunk, while Usopp screams in excitement about the giant robot. With Sanji and Brook also easily falling in love with her, she thinks the crew is just a bunch of idiots. However, Robin gets in her attack stance and says she never heard anything about Vegapunk being a woman.

Thus, the scientist says she is Punk-02, Vegapunk “Lilith.” As the research budget is always tight, she demands the straw hats hand over their valuables. She calls her sea beasts, other marine robots like the shark, to do her dirty work.

Suddenly, someone calls her. He’s Punk-o1, Shaka. Even with the beasts out there, he says she needs to give up because the pirates won’t surrender. He tells her she is underestimating them and then says she needs to look at Zoro and Robin; both are prepared to kill her. If they take her out first, the sea monsters won’t be a problem. Zoro threatens Lilith, and Shaka tells her to bring them to Egghead.

The episode cuts to Luffy and the others. While Bonney takes them to the lab, she explains that she already went there as a child and might have to kill Vegapunk. The scientist transformed her father into a mindless weapon with no sense of self, so she’ll make Vegapunk pay.

The group arrives at a spacious place with hundreds of futuristic buildings. When Luffy sees a giant robot fighting a dragon, he can’t contain his excitement. However, when he jumps to get near them, the dragon swallows him. Still, he passes right through it, which confuses him.

Bonnie, Chopper, and Luffy find a giant parfait and try to eat it, but fail miserably. They pass right through it, the same thing that happened with Luffy and the dragon. The group tries to eat it a few more times, but nothing works, which makes Luffy think they are dead.

Jinbei quickly realizes it’s a hologram, and tells his friends that. Luffy gets so angry, that he does a kind of red Gear 5 transformation. Then, a giant girl, bigger than Kaido, arrives and starts explaining the place to them. Thinking she is a hologram Luffy jumps at her, but she punches him hard, sending him straight to a weird machine near them. When he gets slammed on it, he activates a button, which activates the machine and makes a hamburger. Obviously, he, Bonney, and Chopper go crazy with that and start making many different dishes.

The girl gets angry she can’t mass produce it, as there aren’t enough technicians. She created something wonderful, but the lack of resources disrupts her job. Enraged, she flies off and punches the dragon hologram. With her Light-Pressure Gloves, she can touch and interact with light as if it’s an object.

Then, she introduces herself as a scientist for hire, Dr. Vegapunk. While the others are surprised, Bonney doubts her, thinking she is crazy.

The Episode Review

Seeing the different Vegapunks and how they interact is very interesting. Also, even with minor details, Oda already teaches us a lot about them. Shaka, for example, might act as both a kind of leader and moral compass. And, as the last one is the number 5, we can already assume there’ll be quite a few of them out there.

The part with Luffy, Bonney, Chopper, and Jinbei has less action, but many good jokes. Seeing the red Gear 5 and them trying to eat the parfait multiple times is hilarious.

However, that’s where the episode might lose you. Even though it’s funny, the pacing could be better. Luffy and the others spend more than half of the episode exploring the place and trying to understand the holograms. When you finish it, you feel like a lot more could’ve happened. Egghead is a very anticipated arc, so, although there are many things to explore, taking things too slow might backfire.
