Murder Mubarak (2024) Movie Review – A decent suspenseful murder mystery with an overwhelming cast

A decent suspenseful murder mystery with an overwhelming cast

Murder Mysteries have always been interesting to watch as you end up being glued to your seat while trying to determine who the real killer is. Murder Mubarak is one such suspenseful dark comedy that is a classic whodunit that follows the story of ACP Bhavani Singh, a cop who has to leave town to save his marriage.

ACP Singh ends up investigating his last case before the transfer – that of the death of Leo Matthews, an elite member of The Royal Delhi Club. The film is a fun afternoon watch but is extremely slow-paced. With ACP Bhavani Singh, played by Pankaj Tripathi being at the epicentre of the case, we see the convoluted world of the high society freaks through his eyes.

The first half of the film is owned by the humorous interactions of Tisca Chopra and Dimple Kapadia playing Roshni Batra and Cookie Katoch respectively. The conversation between Roshni and ACP Singh is beyond hilarious and leaves you with some food for thought.

When Roshni states that the poor should just die young because it becomes too “difficult” for them in their old age, it’ll leave your jaw dropped. Such an insensitive comment could be considered a joke by the rich with filthy money.

The film also explores the complicated relationship between Aakash Dogra (played by Vijay Varma) and Bambi Todi (played by Sara Ali Khan) which becomes Murder Mubarak’s highlight. Vijay Varma steals the show with his impeccable acting skills as well as his new charming persona that we’ve loved seeing over his recent appearances. Sara Ali Khan does a great job at Bambi as well.

However, it is the final moments of the film that leave you shocked by Sara’s performance. The film also features a lot of other characters including the likes of Karisma Kapoor who plays Shehnaz Noorani, a small-time actress and Sanjay Kapoor who plays Rannvijay Singh, a less exaggerated version of his real-life self. However, the existence of so many characters makes the film a confusing watch.

As the saying goes, too many cooks spoil the broth, Murder Mubarak could have used fewer characters to keep the suspense alive. Somewhere in the middle of the film, the audience themselves can start to figure out who the killer is and the suspense in the murder mystery is lost. Viewers can absolve some of the characters after concluding that they do not have the motive to murder Leo.

Some characters, like that of Dimple Kapadia, just exist for the sake of adding humour to the plot. Despite his acting prowess, this is not one of Pankaj Tripathi’s best works to date making the film a pretty decent weekend watch in comparison to a riveting murder mystery that the viewers were expecting.

Murder Mubarak is a funny afternoon watch that is decently funny and suspenseful enough to keep you engaged until the very end.
