Murder In A Teacup (2024) Movie Review – Prime documentary is a shocker

Murder in a Teacup sees Amazon Prime attempt to compete with Netflix in the True Crime documentary department, and despite being a very interesting watch, it lacks the visual style of its nearest rivals, choosing to be primarily made up of a mixture of talking head interviews and an actor narrating excerpts from the diary of the killer who is the subject of the documentary.

Graham Young was a serial killer known as the Teacup poisoner, who attacked relatives and friends at an early age and was detained in Broadmoor mental hospital at the tender age of 14. He was able to con his way out of the maximum security hospital and went on to commit murder.

At just over 90 minutes long, it feels a little bit overlong, and probably could’ve been wrapped up within an hour. Also, the narration from the actor does become a bit off-putting as it’s extremely exaggerated and feels a bit too comic villain-esque, which is a stark contrast to the very serious interviews with psychologists and retired investigators in the case.

The film isn’t bad per-se but as mentioned before, it so easily could have been dropped to a more pacey run-time to help the flow of the movie.

Despite that, if you like true crime, this case is an absolute shocker and it raises questions about the release of young offenders who commit awful crimes that point towards more serious crimes being committed in the future.

In this case, Young did escalate his crimes to murder and probably should’ve been locked away for life. There is a good mix of contributors in the documentary who shed light on the case and the horrific nature of it, making it worth watching despite its overlong run-time.
