Will there be a ‘Goodnight Mommy 2?’ Here’s what we know about a sequel:

Goodnight Mommy,  Prime Video’s remake of a 2014 Austrian horror movie, is currently available to stream on Prime Video. If you have seen and enjoyed the movie, you might be interested in a sequel.

But will we see a Goodnight Mommy 2? Or is a follow-up movie unlikely to happen? Here’s what we know:

What is Goodnight Mommy about?

The movie follows twin brothers Elias and Lukas who visit their famous mother at her countryside home. On arrival, they notice something different about her. Not only is her face wrapped up in a medical mask but she is also distant and cold, showing none of the motherly affection that she showed in the past.

The boys suspect she isn’t their mother at all and fearful of what she might do to them, they tie her to her bed.

Will there be a Goodnight Mommy 2?

At the time of writing, no sequel has been announced.

The chances of a sequel happening are very slim as this isn’t a movie that demands a follow-up. The Austrian original didn’t have a sequel so we have no reason to suppose the remake will have a sequel either.

Of course, if the first movie is popular, the decision makers at Prime Video might consider the possibility. There have been surprise sequels to many movies that didn’t really need a follow-up, including Donnie Darko and Wall Street, so we might yet see a sequel, despite the idea of a ‘part 2’ being somewhat implausible.

What could Goodnight Mommy 2 be about?

SPOILER ALERT!!

If there is a sequel, it would likely continue Elias’s story.

At the end of the first movie, it is clear that his mental state has been affected by the death of his twin brother. This leads to tragic repercussions when he lashes out at the woman who may or may not be his mother,

Psycho was another movie that focused on a character whose mental state was affected by the death of somebody close to him and that movie had several sequels. Could Elias be the next Norman Bates? It’s unlikely but with Hollywood’s tendency to create unnecessary sequels, we wouldn’t be overly surprised if they brought Elias back as an older character with a mental state that has deteriorated further.

When could Goodnight Mommy 2 be released?

A sequel could appear in late 2023 or early 2024 but we really don’t expect to see it on any release schedule. As such, you shouldn’t hold your breath for this one.
