Will there be a Flash 2? Here’s what we know about a sequel:

The Flash 2

Despite the speedy abilities of Barry Allen (aka The Flash), it took an awfully long time for a solo movie featuring the DC character to land on our screens.

Development on a Flash film began in the 1980s but it wasn’t until the character was introduced into the DCEU that a movie centered around the Scarlet Speedster started to take shape.

Directed by Andy Muschietti (IT), The Flash finally hit cinemas in June 2023. Despite positive reviews from some critics, the film didn’t perform as well as expected at the box office.

The film, which had a budget somewhere between $200 million to $220 million, grossed $268 million worldwide (as of July 2023), making it one of the biggest box-office bombs in superhero movie history.

Does the movie’s financial failure scupper the chances of a sequel? Will we ever get to see The Flash 2? Here’s what we know.

What is The Flash about?

The movie focuses on Barry Allen (Ezra Miller), who uses his power of super-speed to travel back in time rewrite the past and save his mother. Unfortunately,  he doesn’t manage to save her, but his father, who in Barry’s timeline was imprisoned for her murder, has been released from prison.

In this new timeline, Barry meets an alternate version of himself, as well as Michael Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. Together, they team up to take down General Zod (Michael Shannon) who is once again threatening the world with annihilation.

Do they succeed? Does Barry manage to return to his own timeline? We aren’t going to reveal more about the movie here, just in case you haven’t yet seen it. But if you would like to know more, check out our review of The Flash which goes into a little more detail about the movie and its overall quality.

Will there be a sequel to The Flash?

At the time of writing, a sequel to The Flash has not been confirmed, but according to Variety, the script for The Flash 2 has already been completed. Apparently, it features cameos from Keaton and Calle, although this information is a little dubious considering the fate of both characters in the first film.

But regardless of the completed script, the chances of a sequel to The Flash are quite low. This is partly because of the film’s poor box office performance and partly because DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran are rebooting the DC universe.

The last film within the current DCEU is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is due for release in December 2023, and after that film’s release, the new universe will kick off with Superman: Legacy which is currently slated for release on July 11, 2025. The new Superman will be played by Pearl actor David Corenswet, who replaces Henry Cavill who previously took on the mantle of the Man of Steel.

It’s this change in direction for the DCEU that makes a sequel to The Flash unlikely. A follow-up movie hasn’t been announced and if another movie featuring the Flash is given the green light, it likely won’t be a continuation of what came before. There’s still a chance Ezra Miller could play the character if the new DC movies take place in another section of the Multiverse, though we suspect the bosses of the rebooted DC-verse will want a new cast of actors to take on the roles of our favourite heroes.

Of course, there is a chance we could see a sequel to The Flash that isn’t officially a part of the new DC Universe. If this happens, Ezra Miller would likely reprise the role, provided they have managed to get their life back on track after their recent troubles that have put them under the media spotlight.

What could happen in The Flash 2?

At the end of the first film, Barry Allen thinks he has made his way back to his own universe. However, it turns out that he has taken a wrong direction as he ends up in another part of the Multiverse where George Clooney (and not Ben Affleck) is Batman.

If there is a sequel, we would likely see Barry team up with the Bat-nippled Caped Crusader to take down one of DC’s many villains. We might even see Barry return to his own timeline at the end of the movie.

This is just speculation as The Flash 2 hasn’t been announced. But what do you think could happen in the sequel? Let us know in the comments below.

When could The Flash 2 be released?

In the unlikely event that The Flash 2 does become part of the new DC Universe, we will likely see it sometime after the release of Superman: Legacy in July 2025.

However, published details about the new lineup of films, which include Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow and Batman: The Brave And The Bold, don’t include mention of a Flash movie, so it could be quite a while before the speedy hero (in the guise of Ezra Miller or somebody else besides) makes a return to the screen.

We will update this page with more information if and when new details are released.
