Prologue

Welcome to Like A Dragon Gaiden! The latest Yakuza spin-off is a short, sweet and concise experience but it’s certainly an enjoyable one. As you begin, a cutscene will introduce our main protagonist, who will be none too happy that a thug called Osamu-kun and his goons show and start harassing a young lady.

It doesn’t take long for a fight to kick off, with Osamu-kun and his goons fodder for our first tutorial. The prompts on-screen will be pretty self-explanatory but it’s a good way of warming up to the different moves.

Unlike Like A Dragon, this isn’t a turn-based RPG and much like Yauza, fights will occur in real-time.

Be sure to rest out your combos by pressing Square, guarding with L1, using your fighting stance with R1 and using your useful Spider Gadget by holding O and then using your combos with it.

After the fight, another cutscene will reveal with Osamu’s father s actually the president of Maruhina. As for our damsel in distress, she’s Party Chair Ogikubo’s granddaughter. Osamu rushes off with his tail tucked between his legs, after she promises not to say anything to her grandfather about this unsavory encounter.

Flashbacks will reveal more of our protagonist’s backstory, including Kazuma taking a bullet for a young woman and her child while under attack. He’s paid off to keep quiet about the sensei’s death, and keep the politicians revelling in the dirty secrets they have.

In order to do this, Kazuma has the politician draw up a death certificate. As a result, he’s now working in the shadows.

Chapter 1: Hidden Dragon

It’s been several months since the prologue scene with the granddaughter, and Kazuma has another job to do. He’s not particularly happy about it but he decides to consent all the same. He’s going to be on security detail for a smuggling operation.

We basically just need to stand watch and make sure everything goes okay as gold is smuggled onto a boat. Sounds simple, right?

When you regain control of Kazuma, we’ll be in the port and able to wander about and talk to various guards. They all have codenames, and Kazuma will be called Joryu. Be sure to speak to the different guards here, with one handing over 1x Tauriner.

Unfortunately, things quickly go awry when one of the men recognizes you and ousts your real name. Another fight tutorial will introduce you to Heat Moves.

It’s a simple fight in truth with this Agent, but it paves way for another, where we’ll put everything we’ve learned so far into practice. Make sure to use your finishing blows to make short work of them.

After, Hanawa will show up and we’ll now be introduced to upgrading abilities.. This occurs through manuals, which can be obtained across the story or purchased for money. It’s incredibly useful to do this, given it’ll give us an edge in battle. But we’ll return to that later on.

We knew things wouldn’t go to plan right? It turns out the truck plan is a complete bust. They’ve been tricked, and the container’s completely empty. Hanawa tries to direct traffic, but naturally Kazuma will come into play. Time to defeat the mysterious men.

These guys are a tad tougher than the goons we’ve faced so far, and have weapons in hand. However, you can make short work of them by using a combination of your Spider Gadget and combos. Don’t forget to mix it up with a few finishers too.

When the next fight begins with the group of mysterious men, you’ll need to stay close to Hanawa. He’ll join you in this fight and although he can hold his own, if he loses all his HP, you’ll need to repeat this fight.

Try to stay close to Hanawa (checking the minimap in the bottom left corner) and take out the men closest to him first. Use your combos and finishing blows and you should defeat them without too much of an issue.

In the aftermath, you’ll learn there’s been 3 deaths but Kazuma will be troubled. Those masked men seem to have recognized Kazuma, and that spells bad news.

Hanawa will also discuss someone called Mr X, who seems to have orchestrated this bad deal simply to get Hanawa and kidnap him. But why?

Hanawa believes the Seiryu Clan could be involved, so he has you go check it out.

When you gain control of Kazuma, we’ll be in familiar territory. Our task is to go check out the Seiryu Clan, so walk forward, and take out the street thugs for some easy cash.

There’s a shop just to the left, which happens to be the Pawn Shop. Feel free to stock up on different equipment and gear if you wish, before continuing on. Outside, you’ll find a briefcase on the right of this street holding 1x Silver Plate.

Side Quest –  Get the ball down

On the way, you’ll come across our first little side quest. It’s super simple and it only requires a quick tug of our Spider Gadget.

Approach the tree and press Square to grab the ball. Next, hand it over to the kid by pressing X. As a reward, you’ll be given 1x Nourishment of the Sea King.

When you approach the Seiryu Clan, we’ll be warned that things could get rough. Given there’s not much else to do right now, let’s go ahead and continue the story.

Seiryu Clan & Yuki

Despite scouting the Clan up on the roof, it seems someone is keeping tabs on Kazuma. The goons from the clan catch wind of where you are, and a fight breaks out. But who sent that photo?

First up, defeat the clan members in battle. Be sure to use your combos and given the metal chair up here, it’s a great chance to use that too.

After another cutscene, we’ll be faced with more goons over in the parking lot. These guys aren’t too tough to take out, but be sure to save your Finishing Blows for those with the weapons for maximum effectiveness.

Next up, we’ll have the man in a suit. And for those who played Like A Dragon, you should recognize this as Yuki Tsuruno!

This is the first boss fight in the game, and you’ll need to be a little more strategic with your strikes. When the boss emits a red aura, be careful. This is the cue that he’s about to hit an Ultimate Attack.

They can be countered by pressing R1 and X just as he’s about to strike, and be sure to use this to inflict maximum damage and take him out quickly.

Otherwise, save your Finishing Blows for when the aura is gone, and be use your Spider Gadget to mix things up too. Eventually, he’ll go down.

Turns out this guy is part of the Omi Alliance (which fans of the series will know), and they’ve been looking for Kazuma. They know his death has been faked and so thought they’d grab Hanawa, squeezing info out of him to learn more about the truth.

This is the guy called Mr X we heard about from before. After taking him in your car, things will go awry when a van of doom, sporting this strange masked man from before, will smash into you from the side.

Shishido is his name, and he’ll attempt to kill Hanawa… until Kazuma gets involved. The next fight involves this masked man. He’s not too difficult to beat, so keep pummelling him with combos. Watch out for his spinning punches and kicks, and build up your finishing meter. When you do, hit him with some big strikes.

The second phase of this fight will be harder than the first, with another tutorial for changing fighting stances. Go ahead and do this, but keep a distance from your opponent when he builds up his aura. The finishing strike he has will rage across the arena and hit you with a stiff kick if he gets the chance. Be sure to avoid this.

Build up your own meter and wait for an opportune time to hit your Finisher. Eventually, he’ll go down.

Through the next cutscene, we’ll properly learn Yuki’s name, a supporting character in Like A Dragon. When he leaves, you’ll be introduced to the homeless camp. It’s the place where Ichiban was thrown out and left for dead at the start of Like A Dragon.

When you gain control of Kazuma, feel free to grab the briefcase just to your left, which holds 1x Tauriner, before leaving and following the markers through the streets. In the alleyway, after the encounter with the policeman, be sure to grab 1x Silver Plate from the briefcase on the left.

Defeat the street gangsters on the way and head up to the convenience store. When prompted, select the option “Monitor the situation.”

With the cop gone, head into the store and be sure to grab some gear. Specifically, pick up some Toughness Z. When you head outside, your phone will be confiscated by the next in command under Hanawa, Yoshimura. Naturally, without your phone and unable to contact the Omi Alliance, things don’t look good.

Turns out the Daidojo are prepared to sacrifice Hanawa for the greater good, something Kazuma will not tolerate.

Escaping The Temple

Kazuma will fight back, with help from the monk, and a fight will break out with the agents. Be sure to take advantage of the various objects in the room if you wish, but otherwise this is a pretty straightforward fight.

Fight your way through the temple, taking out the agents in the courtyard. Agent Raita poses a bit of a challenge given his gun, and Agent Mushin’s knife-boots pack a wallop. Finally, Agent Enzen will show but don’t be deceived by his high HP bar, he’s got low defence and his attacks are easy to spot.

Be sure to pick up the bin before vacating this area though, as Agent Saigou is a much tougher foe.

This brute uses an explosive shockwave attack that blasts out and hits everything in a small radius. Be sure to back up when his aura is red to avoid this. Land some simple combos to begin with and then follow it up with an explosive finisher when the aura is gone.

With the goon defeated, follow the linear path through the gardens until you reach Yoshimura. Another fight will break out here and you’ll now have Yoshimura along with the other agents to contend with.

Boss Fight –  Yoshimura and the agents

Tactics to beat: Build up your combo meter and watch out for Yoshimura’s gun. He tends to back off in this fight and shoot from afar so you’ll need to keep moving to avoid this.

Take out the agents first, and hit with simple combos until a good chunk of them are grouped together. Only then should you do your finishing blows in order to hit multiple targets. Once all the agents are down, focus on Yoshimura. If you run low on health, be sure to heal yourself.

Yoshimura has a few opportune spots to attack. The first comes when he’s kneeling down and reloading. At this point, get up nice and close and strike away. The second, comes from when he’s running to the other side of the arena. Watch out for his aura attack though, and if you get too close, he’ll knock you down and shoot you.

Yoshimura could put you in a stun state too, so if you have items to avoid that, use them. Otherwise, tap X when this occurs. Otherwise, use the tactics above and he should go down.

Thankfully, you’ll get the phone and receive the call just in time; you need to head for the Survive Bar, deep in the heart of Ijincho.

Survive should be familiar to those who played Like A Dragon, and Yuki will be waiting for you inside. With Hanawa and the kids at the orphanage’s lives on the line, Kazuma doesn’t have much of a choice but to play ball.

The plan here will be for Kazuma to die again… but in exchange, Yuki will kill Hanawa, the man who’s holding his leash. Will Kazuma take the deal?
