Goodbye Earth – K-drama Episode 11 Recap & Review

Last Christmas

Goodbye Earth episode 11 starts with the people of Woongcheon celebrating their last Christmas. They currently have only 62 days left. Most kids realise that times are tough and there won’t be many gifts. However, Woo-chan is too young to understand. Sister Chae-hwan does her best to lift the kids’ spirits. Even though it is a bleak and sad Christmas, the kids give each other gifts like biscuits.

On the other hand, Mi-ryeong and Dae-han travel to the beach to spread Min-ho’s ashes and try to come to terms with their loss. It is a heartbreaking scene as they say goodbye to their beloved son. They then camp in the wild for a few days and reminisce about what a good son Min-ho was.

Back in Woongcheon, the community rallies behind Mrs Kim, who has become ill. She is displaying signs of dementia and can’t keep up with the present ongoings. The news of her son’s actions and death hit her hard. It also gave her time to reflect on the life she had lived. They try to comfort her as she shifts between reality and the past.

On the other hand, Father Baek also takes the events that transpired on D-day hard. He is too stunned to speak and is ill. Sun-jae advises him to at least get better and apologise to the people he hurt. Sung-jae fasted for days and decided to give up priesthood out of shame. He couldn’t get past Father Baek’s betrayal. Myeong-ok and Sister Chae-hwan try to convince him to return.

At the same time, Soo-geum turns to gambling and drinking while Ha-yool leaves home for good. Once he runs out of money, he approaches Sergeant Kim. The rascal asks for Ha-yool in exchange for a seat on the last ship. Sadly, Ha-yool is not in a good place mentally and is already struggling. The last thing she needs is her dad selling her to a trafficking ring!

As the days go by, the military has a hard job picking the bodies of those who died. Most of the bodies are stored in the freezer. Myeong-ok and many worry that In-ah will lose her career as the military tries to use her as a scapegoat for what happened on D-day.

Unfortunately, Myeong-ok’s efforts to get close to her daughter are thwarted. In-ah shuts her out completely. This is probably because In-ah felt her mom was not supportive when she came out and the trauma she endured as a kid. Her mom focused more on her late brother and ignored her. After numerous trials, In-ah finally confronts her mom and starts her healing process.

The town’s supply is getting low, and they can’t even afford to have the flu because there are no medicines. Nonetheless, they rely on each other to get through the days. Sung-jae is still having a hard time with Father Baek’s betrayal. Everyone feels hurt by Father Baek, they all hold him on a pedestal and have warm memories of him.

As for Se-kyung and Yoon-sang, they hold on to each other, having hope that they still have at least 60 days. They finally get married and give the community a reason to celebrate. Rare chances of good memories like this keep the people of Woongcheon going.  Yoon-sang also keeps busy with his time-capsule project, which allows the resident to archive their lives in hopes those records would be found someday.

Ji-eun decides to keep her pregnancy even though she has no hope for her baby’s future. She loses her temper and tells her husband everything she has been holding in. Elsewhere, Young-ji receives bad news about Young-han’s condition. Without medicine, the doctors can’t operate on him. Hyun-tae consistently checks up on her, and she remembers and thanks him. Unfortunately, Young-chan dies, and Young-ji is racked with guilt and grief.

Mrs Kim continues to lose more memories and gets lost in the woods. Thankfully, Se-kyung finds and rescues her. Unfortunately, Mrs Kim is not the only one lost; Ha-yool is also distancing herself from her friends. They spend most of Christmas looking for her. Thankfully, they find her safe and sound.

After losing all his money and getting into a deal with Sergeant Kim, Soo-geum sells Ha-yool to the traffickers. Sergeant Kim and his men start looking for Ha-yool, but thankfully, she is safe with the other kids. Out of shame, Soo-geum commits suicide. The community continues to hold memorials for the dead and bury all the bodies together.

During the memorial service, Sergeant Kin and his men interrupt the service, demanding to take Ha-yool. The gang cause chaos at the church, and the kids escape and go into hiding. At this moment, it dawns on Se-kyung that she has to take action. She takes out her gun and, point blankly, shoots one of the gang members in the leg. She continues to fire the gun even when it is jammed.

In-ah is shocked and takes Se-kyung away to calm her down. Se-kyung insists that she had to save Ha-yool and refuses to explain how she got the gun. She is hit with remorse after calming down, and Yoon-sang hands In-ah the gun. In-ah orders Yoon-sang to take Se-kyung home while she handles the situation. It is hard for Yoon-sang to see Se-kyung in this state, but he still comforts her.

The Episode Review

The gang keeps showing up like a bad penny. They have gotten brazen but didn’t anticipate Se-kyung having a gun. In her defence, she had every right to pull that trigger; it was self-defence. While we are at it, Soo-geum deserves more punishment. He is a coward who sold his kid for some gambling money and then committed suicide. May his soul be tormented in hell! He is the cause of all these troubles. What a selfish human being!

Once again, we see In-ah sweep into action to save Se-kyung. She is a ride-and-die friend, but in our eyes, she is a hero, too. She stands up for the defenceless and does the right thing to save them, even if it costs her everything.

Things can’t be easy for Yoon-sang. The picture he had of Se-kyung is quickly changing. He is starting to see the layered person she is, and he still loves her. Whether this is a good or bad thing remains to be seen.
