Furies Plot Summary

Considered a prequel to Veronica Ngo’s action film Furie, Furies (aka Thanh Soi) is a 2023 Netflix Vietnamese movie starring Veronica Ngo, Song Luan, Dong Anh Quynh, Toc Tien and Rima Thanh Vy that follows a group of female vigilantes — Jacqueline, Thanh, Hong and Bi. They decide to take it upon themselves to take down horrible and powerful men who take advantage of women.

They target the Big 4 who are responsible for several brothels in the city and also run a sex trafficking ring. In all of this, Bi, a girl from the streets is roped in when Jacqueline the women’s leader saves her from some men and gives her a home. As they try to dismantle the Big 4’s business and take down their leader, secrets are unravelled that pit the women against each other.

Who are the Big 4 and why are they targeted?

As the three girls get ready to take down the corrupt and powerful men, Jacqueline gives them their first mission. Their first target is the Big 4 who pretty much run the nightlife of the downtown area. Along with smuggling drugs, they also take part in human trafficking. In fact, Thanh was sold to one of their brothels before Jacqueline saved her.

The leader is Hai the Mad Dog who is ruthless and shows no mercy. Son Lai whose life he once saved is a loyal bodyguard who is brutal and undefeated. Long is the main dealer who cleverly smuggles drugs in front of the police. He, however, is often conflicted as he feels for the young girls who are sold.

The fourth member is Teo who leads the sex trafficking ring. Jacqueline declares that taking them down will save hundreds of girls who would otherwise be kidnapped and trafficked. However, that is not the only reason why she targets them. They are responsible for her family’s murder and she wants revenge.

What is Jacqueline’s plan for the Big 4?

Hai decides to team up with A Thoong, another drug lord. Hai promises him a new batch of goods but if he fails, A Thoong will take over his territory of the Nancy Market. These goods include drugs and girls and Teo is in charge of the deal. When Teo asks for backup from Long, he just mocks him. But in reality, Long stays back as he is working with Jacqueline and knows that the girls will attack. He also happens to be dating Hong.

Jacqueline informs the girls of the new shipment at an ice factory and they plan to get revenge for Thanh as Teo, her former brothel owner will be there too. Hong easily takes down the guards and frees the girls while Bi and Thanh kill Teo. Hong burns down the ice factory while Thanh steals a briefcase of drugs as per Jacqueline’s instructions.

As Hai is furious about the loss of men, his goods and the Nancy Market, Jacqueline decides to end things by taking down Hai too. He often visits the New Century Club with lots of bodyguards so the girls disguise themselves to blend in. While Thanh is the getaway driver, Hong and Bi pretend to be waitresses and hookers. He takes the girls with him to a room and they attack but he fends them off and runs away.

Son and his men go after them while Thanh waits for them outside. Just as Long arrives, Son stabs Hong. As she dies she whispers that she loves Long. Thanh rescues Bi and they escape on a bike but not before she is wounded in the stomach. She and Bi are then chased by Son’s men who attack but they shake them off and head home. However, Son finds their hideout as he was tailing them separately.

What is Jacqueline’s reason for revenge?

While the girls have all been wronged by men and want to stop other men from taking advantage of girls, Jacqueline doesn’t have the same reason to be a vigilante. In fact, she is not one and it is just her cover so that she can get the girls to do her bidding. From the beginning of the movie, it is hinted that something terrible had happened to her and she needs pills to stay alive.

She has huge scars on her stomach and it is revealed that her husband, Hoang was Long’s brother. He was also a part of the mafia and was working with Hai but the latter got greedy and killed him for his territory. He also killed their son and stabbed Jacqueline. While he didn’t wait to check if she was dead, Long helped her fake her death and tell him that he saw her body in the morgue.

She wants revenge for her son and husband and so targets Hai. Later when Jacqueline confronts Hai, he says that it was a man called Nam’s idea to kill Hoang but the son was an accident. It is then revealed that along with revenge, Jacqueline also wants Hai’s territories.

Why does Bi get angry at Jacqueline?

While Bi and Hong keep Hai company, they overhear him saying he killed Jacqueline’s family as he asks Long to make sure that she is really dead and not the one behind the attacks. In her quest for revenge, Jacqueline indirectly gets Hong killed which makes Bi furious. Since Hong died for Jacqueline’s false ideals and the woman has been using the three girls for her revenge, an angry Bi leaves.

However, Son finds their hideout and kills Sau, the restaurant owner who had been kind to Bi when she first came to the city. Bi is upset and Jacqueline tells her that she needs to see it through and take down Hai once and for all. After the fight with Hai’s men when he is cornered by the girls and Long, he tries to bargain with Jacqueline that she can have Hoang’s old territories back.

She says she has all of his territories and she kills him which shocks Bi of her greed as she realises it’s gone beyond revenge. The final straw is Jacqueline ordering Thanh to kill Bi as she will otherwise come in the way.

How do the girls take down Hai’s casino?

Jacqueline barters the briefcase full of drugs to get some of A Thoong’s strongest men as a backup. With the man, Jacqueline, Bi and Thanh head to Hai’s casino and start killing all the guards. They are successful but in the chaos, they see that Jacqueline has slipped away. As she tries to find Hai alone, someone stabs her from behind. It is later revealed that it was Long and he pretended to stab her so Hai who was watching threw the CCTV will think she is dead.

Meanwhile, Thanh is injured as she is repeatedly hit on her stomach wound. As Bi tries to help her, Hai sends a drug-crazed junkie who attacks them. However, Bi is able to stop him and kill him just in time. Elsewhere, Long sends Son on a wild goose chase to Jacqueline’s hideout.

When Hai calls Son for backup, he realises that Long has betrayed them. Son confronts Long and they fight. However, Long is able to take him down and is accompanied by Bi and Thanh as he heads to the comms room where Hai is hiding. At that moment, Jacqueline takes Hai by surprise and shoots him in the leg.

How does it end for the vigilantes?

Hong is killed during the second mission when they fail to kill Hai. While rescuing Bi from the club, Thanh is stabbed in the stomach and she has no time to recover as Jacqueline announces that they will be taking down the casino the next day. As they fight, her wound keeps worsening. Later, when Hai is cornered, Jacqueline kills Long as he didn’t do anything to stop him when he killed her husband.

After she kills Hai as well, she orders Thanh to trust her and kill Bi. Thanh is angry as she pretends to shoot Bi but when she changes directions to shoot Jacqueline instead, the older lady is faster and shoots Thanh in the stomach. Her injury aggravates and she falls into a shock and dies. Furious, Bi attacks Jacqueline and they fight as they try to shoot each other with the latter’s gun.

Finally Bi empties the gun into Jaqueline’s stomach and they fall apart. Bi blacks out while Jaqueline sits on a chair and smokes as she concedes defeat. Her lit cigarette falls hinting that she has died. When the cops appear, they see that Bi is still alive and she is arrested and put in prison for 15 years for her murders.
