Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Season 3 Episode 9 Recap & Review

The Real Self

Episode 9 of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba season 3 titled ‘Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito’ begins with the swordsmiths hiding while Tokito faces off against Gyokko. The demon keeps insulting him while Tokito states facts about how he is just going to kill him. Unable to take his taunts, the demon releases tons of fish minions but Tokito easily destroys them in just two moves.

He strikes at the demon, but Gyokko sheds his skin and shows his true form which is that of a diamond-scaled snake. They start bickering as Tokito is not impressed while Gyokko tries to flex his speed and strength. The slayer then smiles as he says all of that is pointless if the demon’s attacks don’t actually land on him.

He remembers the rage he experienced as his brother, Yuichiro’s body rotted away. He too was on the brink of death when Amane and her kids arrive and save him. Tokito loses his memories but his anger remains as he starts training to kill all demons.

Gyokko gets serious as he attacks with all of his strength but Tokito is not deterred. The demon is unable to catch him as he is covered in mist. As the demon watches, the slayer beheads him. Gyokko is shocked that he lost to a worthless child and he tries to regenerate so as to kill him for Lord Muzan. Tokito doesn’t show any anger as he simply slices him into pieces till all of Gyokko vanishes.

He suddenly remembers Ubuyashiki saying that once he knows who he is, he will be stronger. The marks on his face disappear and he smiles as he tells Kanamori he is fine. He starts trembling as he says he now needs to help Tanjiro but he faints. Kanamori is annoyed that Haganezuka won’t move even when he is about to be killed. As Kotetsu goes to help him, the older swordsmith is shocked as he thinks the child died.

Kotetsu points out that only his hand was injured while the sword guard that Tanjiro had given him for his next sword protected him. Tokito opens his eyes and sees that the sword guard belongs to Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira who had always been friendly to him. He suddenly sees his parents and Yuichiro smiling at him and saying that he did well.

As for poor Tanjiro, he is busy fighting the five dragon heads of the Hate Clone. He, Nezuko and Genya do their best but are constantly on defence as the Hate Clone also uses the abilities of the four demons he has absorbed to attack them. They are barely able to survive and are shocked when one of the heads swallows Tanjiro.

Suddenly, Mitsuri, shows up, slicing the dragon’s head and saving Tanjiro. He cannot hear what she is saying but she tells him to rest as she promises to save Nezuko and Genya. He is worried but she easily uses her whip sword to take stop the demon head headed her way.

In the epilogue, Zenitsu wonders about their screen time while Inosuke tries to figure out why he can’t sense any demon near them. Zenitsu is resigned as he says they will then just have to finish their ongoing mission on move on to the next.

The Episode Review

With Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba season 3 coming close to the end, we’ve been getting several callbacks to the premiere such as Gyokko’s initial aim, which was to find the slayers and weaken the village for Lord Muzan. We also finally get a glimpse of our favourite characters, Zenitsu and Inosuke who have been with Tanjiro since season 1. Their chaotic presence was sorely missed and we hope they have a longer cameo before the season ends.

As for episode 9, it has everything from closure and comedy to action and new beginnings. After years of wondering about Tokito, his story has finally been revealed. It was also hilarious to see this new, or old side of him, bickering with Gyokko and remembering his colleagues fondly. It will also be exciting to see Mitsuri in action as she fights the Hate Clone singlehandedly.
