Deep Night – Season 1 Episode 2 Recap & Review

Episode 2

Deep Night Episode 2 launches with a sleepy Khem at school talking to Japan about the Multiverse. A world where people are friends and another multiverse where it’s not so friendly. He turns to a studious Wela who glares at him, as usual.

In class, Wela asks his classmates to fill out a form, but Khem refuses. At work Khem says he’ll fill out the form citing that they can’t speak at school. But as Wela opens his locker, Khem takes his comb, running it through Wela’s hair and flirting with him. A blushing Wela turns away.

A not-terribly-undercover Japan who’d spotted Wela and Khem at the club previously, sneaks around to catch them. He’s caught looking suspicious by host Seji, claiming he’s there for a job. They struggle and almost immediately fall over and land in a kiss. When the club owner arrives, Japan can’t escape his excuse and is hired to work at the club.

Inside, Rose, a social media influencer, is making a video. She’s told not to film the hosts and claims she’ll be professional. As an influencer, she’s matched up with the #1 host, Wela. She wheedles him into drinking tons of alcohol even after he explains the drinks are for her, not really for the hosts.

Khem is riled up at watching Rose all over Wela, trying to feed him more booze. Seji explains that Wela can signal a guard once he’s had enough. In the midst of things, Japan steps in as a new hire, immediately confronting his friend. Khem hustles him away but then admits he works there and that Wela too is a host.

Rose tells Wela she’ll delete his face from her video only if he keeps drinking. To the staff, Wela claims he’s fine and keeps going, keeping things pleasant.

Japan takes an opportunity to get between Seji and another customer but accidently reveals that he’s not really a bartender. Japan complains at Seji for kissing him earlier. Seji’s about to show Japan a real kiss when Ken interrupts.

Outside, Khem gets a text from Japan showing a large drinks bill at the influencer table. Worried about Wela’s state, Khem tries to rescue him. When she protests, he throws the influencer’s phone in water saying he’ll replace it as a club special. She throws a fit shouting for everyone to film the club as security drags her out.

Khem takes a drunk Wela home, trying to resist his clinging. His mother catches him and gives a warning about jumping into disputes with customers. She also notes that he should send Wela to the guest room.

Back in Khem’s room a still-drunk Wela is preparing for a shower, inviting Khem to join. He can’t completely resist kissing but Khem manages to avoid Wela’s moves as he struggles to undress him.

When they wake in Khem’s bed, Wela remembers nothing. But he observes that Khem is rich enough not need a job as a parking attendant. He spots some hastily tucked framed photos and believes Khem must be a fan of club owner Freya (Khem’s Mom).

At the club, Japan wakes to Seji taking his photo as he sleeps on the couch. He recalls sampling some drinks to improve his mixology knowledge. Seji tucked him in at the club and stayed with him all night.

That morning, Khem takes Wela home. Discovering his family business is a restaurant, he offers to help out, gaining favor with Wela’s Mother. They spend the day working and being silly together. Afterwards, Wela’s Mom confesses that they need Wela to work his second job to stay afloat. But she seems to be confused on what that night job is.

As Khem gets ready to depart, Wela asks how intimate they’d been the previous night. He kisses Khem and affirms he thinks he knows what happened.

At work, Japan complains about being tired but he won’t quit, smiling as Seji walks in. Freya comes in to announce that tables are sold out for Friday Night Party, a Host Auction evening. Khem jumps on the phone to club manager, Di.

The Episode Review

Deep Night (iQIYI) quickly shifts with a change of heart by Wela after he’s rescued and taken care of by Khem. At least that’s how it looks from here. What are the chances things go back to silent at school the next day?

Khem’s already adjusted to his so-called multiverse where he can be friendly with Wela at work and strangers at university. But now that they’ve have some intimate moments, does he hope for more? Is he willing to keep playing that multiverse game?

Hearing from Wela’s Mom offers a sliver of insight, acknowledging that Wela is studious, a loner and must focus on work for his family. He’s not just the #1 Host for kicks (which is what he’s been saying all along). So while Khem may be ready for something more, Wela may not have any more to give just yet. At least not enough to distract him from focused school-work or his well-paying job.

Now that Japan has joined the team, there’s another will-they-won’t-they in the mix. But doesn’t it look like Seji may have more than a friendly relationship with Ken? Still to be seen but there may be an extra barrier for Japan if he’s truly interested in Seji who seems an awful lot like a player. Apart from Wela, all the other guys in the club seem more than a couple years older than the university guys. And likely more experienced when it comes to relationships.
