Dear Edward – Season 1 Episode 10 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Shelter

Episode 10 of Dear Edward starts with the aftermath of Edward finding the letters. Lacey is shocked and blames John for not paying attention to Eddie. “We’re going to find him.” He says defiantly, and the pair head out to look for him. When Shay finds out, she blames herself for not letting Eddie stay at hers anymore. However, it’s Mahina not Shay that gives some valuable intel as she points out exactly where Eddie could be – he’s in the museum. Well… for a bit he is anyway. When the attendant shows and asks him what he’s doing, Eddie rushes out and into the streets.

Is Eddie found?

Eddie continues to spiral and hallucinates, seeing Jordan in front of him. He follows his brother all the way to their old apartment. Eddie lets himself in and begins looking about the place, trying to rekindle those old memories.

Lacey eventually shows up and finds Eddie, promising that she’ll always find him no matter what. Before that though, Eddie gains some closure through Faakhir, the street vendor. Earlier in the season we saw Eddie pretend that the family were alive and well, which only made him feel worse that he couldn’t confront reality. This time though, he admits that his family died on the plane. “God bless you Eddie,” Faakhir says warmly.

Elsewhere, Adriana prepares for her big day with everyone getting ready to vote. She casts her vote and prepares for the results.

Does Dee Dee open up and admit her true feelings?

Dee Dee tries to find some gear to use for the final grief session party but she’s disappointed that there’s so many Christian props and not anything she can use. A man enters, Father Macelvoy, who offers to help. He does most of the heavy lifting but his sympathetic ear is just what Dee Dee needs to open up. She admits that she’s not happy that no one really cares about the final session.

Dee Dee admits that she has no one to go back to and she’s all alone. With her husband dead and the relationship with her daughter tenuous at best, Dee Dee is convinced that no one would care if she even died. It’s the first time we’ve properly seen her walls break down and it’s a really tender moment.

Meanwhile, Steve admits he’s falling in love with Amanda, and is going to break up with Daphne. Amanda is not particularly happy to hear that, believing they need to be honest with Brent. Given he’s engaged and everything’s messed up, Amanda points out that this isn’t the basis for a healthy relationship and they should probably go their separate ways.

Speaking of separate ways, everyone actually shows up to the final grief session after all, with Lacey and Eddie also showing. The party is just what they all need to let loose and confront what’s brought them all together. They also eat dumplings too and honestly, don’t watch this episode if you’re hungry, they look delicious!

How does Dear Edward season 1 end?

Lacey returns home, where John opens up and admits that he does pay attention to her and points out all the little things Lacey does that he adores. At the same time, Adriana wins the election and dedicates it to her Grandma, promising to make a real difference in the district. She also thanks Kojo too, who happens to be watching on a livestream.

Eddie speaks to Shay in confidence, admitting that she’s the reason he’s still around and he wants her to have some of his most precious belongings as a thank you present. He also points out all the people who have written to him. Shay’s eyes light up and she believes they need to read and respond to all of these letters immediately.

Ten weeks later, Adriana is sworn in as Congresswoman while Becks and Kojo watch. Steve goes ahead with his wedding after all while Amanda focuses on her music. Dee Dee moves to LA with her daughter and they start a new life, while Eddie reads through a whole bunch of letters, including one in particular that seems to be from his Uncle!

The Episode Review

Dear Edward finally comes to a close after a long, emotionally draining set of episodes. The melodrama and the sadness have been mainstays in this show but it’s the dragged out pacing and the meandering subplots that have really held this back from being a better watch.

The most egregious thing here comes form the sheer number of characters. The subplots involving Sam and Steve in particular really feel like filler and I can’t help but feel more time dedicated to our core group of characters, not to mention a tighter run-time, would have helped this show shine.

As it happens, Dear Edward does manage to pull off a pretty good ending and seeing Dee Dee finally open up to Father Mac is one of the stand-out moments of the show.

Dear Edward ends with a satisfying enough conclusion, even with that baited cliffhanger. This actually works quite well as an open-ended finish too, with Eddie finally making peace with what’s happened and ready to move forward with his life. It’s not perfect, but the show does at least end on a high.
