Dead Boy Detectives – Episode 6 Recap & Review

The Case of the Creeping Forest

In episode 6 of Dead Boy Detectives, things between Niko and Jenny are less than pleasant. Crystal is determined to get David out of her head and asks for Niko’s help. The two make their way to the magic shop and ask for something to block a demon. They purchase a black heart named ‘Light of Heart’, supposed to protect one from “toxic entanglements”.

The owner, Tragic Mick, on encouragement from Niko, tells them about his tragic tale. Apparently, many years ago, a father drowned her daughter to save himself in the sea amidst a terrible storm. The gods had mercy on the child and turned her into Sedna, the goddess of the sea. From her severed fingers birthed walrus’, Tragic Mick and his brothers and sisters. But Tragic Nick wanted to experience more even when Sedna warned him that he would never be able to return to the sea as a walrus. Tragic Mick became a human and was stuck in the mortal realm. Back in her room, Crystal wishes to have David out of her head and it works. But she loses her powers as well.

Meanwhile, Esther is brewing something to take revenge on the boys. She asks Monty to lure them to the woods. Meanwhile, Crystal is hiding the loss of her powers from the boys. This is when Monty asks the group’s help claiming that his ghost friend has gone missing. He takes them to an enchanted woods which is notorious for being a danger to ghosts. Niko decides to stay to keep Jenny feel safe.

The group searches the woods and comes across a ghost consuming moss. Charles and Edwin tell Monty and Crystal that once a ghost is consumed, they have no afterlife or reincarnation. With the help of a book, Edwin makes a potion to get rid of the moss but they realise that it’s a different trans-dimensional creature. The team splits up.

Charles and Crystal come across David’s hauntings while Edwin and Monty discuss about their feelings. Monty seems to have become attached towards Edwin and Edwin assures him that he does care about his feelings. Monty has a change of heart and tries to take the group out of the forest when the cat king appears and tells Edwin that Monty is Esther’s crow and he’s luring them into a trap. Monty goes to Esther arguing about the dangerous being she’s conjured but Esther turns him back into a crow, realising that he’s getting too attached.

Esther appears with a giant mushroom with spiky teeth and orders it to capture the ghosts to consume them. Crystal heeds to the washerwoman’s advice and looks within and finds that a spiritual place where all her ancestors gather. They tell her about her collective power that comes from her ancestors. She uses that power to tackle Esther.

She connects with the elemental being through the shared power and tells her that it is free to leave this realm and that Esther cannot control it. The giant mushroom apologises and goes back to its dimension, taking Esther along with it. The three friends return. Case Closed.

While this is happening, Niko and Jenny talk about the incident and Jenny suggest that she don’t set her up again.  In the meantime, Night Nurse finds herself inside the sea monster’s stomach. She meets a man, Kashi, who’s living in the fish’s stomach. Kashi questions the Night Nurse’s narrow thinking that everyone has a place to be in. Kashi suggests that the boys might be happier where are they are. Kashi suggests to ask the fish to let the Night Nurse out and the fish complies. The Night Nurse learns a lesson in being kind, empathetic and having better communications skills.

She appears in front of the boys just when Edwin is to tell Charles about his feelings. Charles tells her about Edwin’s technical mishap which took him to hell and the Night Nurse agrees as she finds something strange on Edwin’s form. She agrees to let them stay together until she returns but a giant being from Hell snatches Edwin and takes him back.
