All American – Season 6 Episode 5 Recap & Review

Episode 5

At the start of episode 5, Coach Boon’s away dealing with a family emergency, so Coach Mac has to step in. Mac has his own playbook that centers around Jordan, which is working well for the team but Spencer’s feeling left out, and he’s not happy about it. During the game, Spencer asks Jordan for the ball, but Jordan ignores him.

When Spencer brings it up with Mac, he just tells him to focus on the game. Predictably, tensions rise between Jordan and Spencer on the field. In the locker room, Mac tells Spencer that he’s selfish and only plays for himself, not the team. Meanwhile, Olivia gets a surprise visit from Ashley, her best friend from London. Ashley came to LA to help Olivia with her writer’s block after Olivia left him a voicemail about it.

The catch is that Spencer doesn’t know that Ashley is actually a guy, not a girl, as believed.  On another note, Jordan needs a new roommate because their landlord raised the rent on their beach house. After interviewing several potential roommates, they finally settled on a seemingly perfect couple. However, they soon discover that the couple fights more than they get along.

At school, Deion’s sister gives him a hard time, saying his game is getting worse every day. Spencer overhears and Tasha, frustrated, asks Spencer to help Deion see reason. Tasha’s always tough on her brother, and this public scolding is just the start of it all, says Preech.

Spencer also notices Deion’s lack of focus on the field and sits down with him to talk about it. However, Deion has a severe panic attack. Luckily, Spencer is there to help him calm down. Spencer then takes Deion to a place where he goes to think when he has a lot on his mind.

There, Spencer realizes something and asks Deion how long he has actually hated football. Deion tries to brush it off, but Spencer advises Deion to stop pretending to like football and to find his true passion. Later that night, Deion texts Spencer, asking him to introduce him to his therapist.

Spencer visits Olivia and is shocked to learn that Ashley is actually a boy, someone Olivia used to hang out with in London. Spencer gets a bit upset when he finds out that Olivia told Ashley about the deadline extension but didn’t tell him.

When Spencer brings it up, Olivia says she never said Ashley was a girl, but Spencer points out that she never corrected him either. After everyone leaves, Ashley asks Olivia what she’s scared of, and Olivia admits she’s afraid to interview her mother, Carol, especially after the interview with Spencer’s mother went awry.

Ashley advises her to do it anyway, suggesting that this vulnerability is what her book needs.

The Episode Review

Spencer and Olivia’s relationship is hitting a rough patch. Spencer is feeling bummed that his girlfriend, the love of his life, is more open about her issues with someone else.

He used to believe that a change of scenery, like going to London, would make things better, but now he’s starting to wonder if Olivia has really changed. Just when he thought he was done overthinking, this situation had him second-guessing everything.

Towards the end of the episode, Spencer tries to get Olivia to open up about her book-writing problems, but she shuts him down, saying she’s got it all figured out. Looks like trouble’s brewing in paradise for these two.
