Alice & Jack – Season 1 Episode 5 Recap & Review

Episode 5

Episode 5 kicks off with Jack accompanying Alice for her sperm insemination procedure. However, their undeniable romantic tension leads them to have sex right there in the clinic bed, hinting that Jack may want to be the father of Alice’s child. Jack calls Rachel and shares what had happened, but she abruptly ends the call, indicating she’s done with Jack. 

Months later, Alice becomes pregnant, and when she shares the news with Jack, she suggests they pick up where they left off. However, Jack remains silent. The situation takes a tragic turn when Alice learns during a doctor’s visit that she has cancer. After the devastating news, Jack tirelessly searches for a cure for Alice’s illness while also making sure to spend every moment he can with her. 

Jack is rushed to the hospital after severe chest pain and is diagnosed with Danlos Syndrome, a genetic disorder similar to an aortic aneurysm. It’s a shock for Jack, especially since he always thought his parents died of heart attacks when, in fact, they succumbed to the same syndrome. However, the doctor assures Jack that with proper treatment and care, there’s no need to worry about his condition.

During one of their meetings, Alice reveals that she wants to travel and asks Jack to take her to Cuba. On their way to Heathrow Airport, they get into a minor accident, prompting them to cancel their vacation plans and spend some quality time together. While enjoying fizzy drinks, they discuss their future aspirations, including what they’ll do when their kids grow up and the places they want to visit together.

As they roam the streets of London, they talk about their careers and dreams. Celia reveals she no longer wants to pursue finance and plans to focus on philanthropy, while Jack intends to continue his work in the lab until the end. However, it’s clear from their expressions that they’re both afraid of losing each other.

Eventually, Jack comes to the realization that they won’t be able to find a cure for Alice’s disease, especially not within the limited time she has left. So, he asks Paul to put their project on hold and go back to what they were doing before.

The Episode Review

It seems Jack has finally come to terms with the harsh reality that no matter how much he tries, Alice’s time is running out. Now, he’s resolved to cherish every precious moment they have left together, and it seems Alice shares the same sentiment – she’s expressed gratitude to Jack numerous times for his forgiveness despite her past mistakes.

As Alice grows increasingly frail and weak, she yearns for more time, though deep down, she knows it’s a fleeting hope. It appears both Jack and Alice have accepted the inevitable truth looming over them.

But is this the end of Jack and Alice’s story? Well, perhaps it’s the end of one chapter, but their journey together might continue in ways they never imagined. After all, true love has a way of transcending even the most heartbreaking endings.
